How Long Are The MTV Movie & TV Awards? If History Shows Anything, A Crazy Live TV Moment Could Extend The Show
The MTV Movie Awards are now *drum roll* the MTV Movie & TV Awards. That's right, the award show has expanded to include TV during this golden age of scripted and marathon-worthy television. Even with a whole new category added, the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards run time is surprisingly unaffected.
According to MTV's online schedule, the 2017 MTV Movie Awards will begin at 8:00 p.m. ET and run for two hours and 10 minutes. The awards show, hosted by Adam Devine, will then be rebroadcast on repeat through the early morning hours of May 8. This two-hour, 10-minute run time is the same as listed last year, according to a 2016 Mic.com article. So, the expanded TV awards are not adding to the show, but being blended in.
According to the list of nominees on ABC, the first ever MTV Movie & TV Awards is shaking things up by combining television and film performances in award categories. Categories like Best Villain, Best Kiss, Best Hero, Best Duo, and more will feature both film and TV performances. So, all eyes are on the ceremony to see what medium comes out on top.
While the show is slated to run just over two-hours, MTV has some wiggle room with rebroadcasts scheduled after the ceremony. And, it may need it as awards shows often run late due to unexpected events. Anything can happen on live TV... Just look at some of the things that went down in MTV Movie Awards history.
1. Rachel McAdams & Ryan Gosling Kiss
OK, this epic Best Kiss moment went down more than a decade ago, and I still can't stop thinking about it.
2. Jim Carrey's Weird Acceptance Speech
When Jim Carrey won for The Truman Show, he accepted the award in a weird hippie persona. It dragged on and people weren't entirely sure what to make of it, especially when he started singing. Oh, and there was a cringe-worthy comment about "fine-looking p***y." Yikes.
3. Kristen Stewart Drops Her Trophy
Remember, when Kristen spilled her popcorn?
4. Mila & Justin Get Handsy
To prove that they weren't dating, Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake felt each other up, naturally.
5. Seth Rogen & James Franco Light Up
The camera pulled back at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards when Seth Rogen and James Franco pulled out what they claimed wasn't real weed and smoked it on stage.
6. Snoop & Kesha Light Up
Snoop and Kesha casually smoked at the 2013 show, while presenting an award.
7. Robert Pattinson Kisses ... Taylor Lautner
Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson won for Best Kiss in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012, according to TV Guide. In 2011, Pattinson opted to kiss a different co-star instead.
8. Eminem Vs. Triumph
Eminem took Triumph the Insult Comic Dog's comments to heart ... Which led to an awkward cut to Christina Aguilera.
9. That Awkward 'To Do List' Moment
Aubrey Plaza ran onstage while Will Ferrell was accepting his comedic genius award. Plaza had the title of her movie The To Do List written across her chest and a drink in hand while she tried to take the award from Ferrell. The entire thing was painfully awkward with Ferrell asking Plaza, in all seriousness, if she was OK. Plaza was then reportedly kicked out of the ceremony, according to the above GMA video.
If anything like this goes down on Sunday, the show could extend a little longer than planned.
