Just when you thought you couldn't love the Hamilton creator any more, Lin-Manuel Miranda made a Galentine's Day playlist that somehow manages to prove that he's even more amazing than we thought. I already knew that he was a lit'ral genius, because McArthur told me, but I didn't realize that we were walking around the world harboring the same musical crushes on powerhouse ladies in the industry. But now that Miranda has published his playlist to Spotify, the secret is out, and I'll be telling everyone I meet that I have something in common with the force of creativity behind the Moana soundtrack. Sorry not sorry.
"Galentine's Day" is a holiday created created by Parks and Recreation that falls on Feb. 13, the day before Valentine's Day, and gives women an excuse — as if we need one — to celebrate the female friendships in our lives instead of fixating solely on the romantic ones that already get so much attention on Feb. 14. And the playlist Miranda created honors and celebrates the strong, beautiful, talented women in our collective lives in much the same way, featuring empowering songs by female artists from Destiny's Child to Regina Spektor to Florence + The Machine and beyond.
At this point, I should expect nothing less from Lin-Manuel Miranda, who's proven time and time again that he can curate with the best of them. But this is the perfect Galentine's Day collection, leading the listener on a walk down memory lane and through music history, combining contemporary artists with more iconic names. If you've never checked out people like Celia Cruz or The Pointer Sisters, this is your chance to take a listen.
And the best part is, in addition to celebrating the ladies of music and honoring the legacy of Parks and Rec, with every track to listen to, you're getting closer to twinning your brain with Lin-Manuel Miranda's. I'm pretty sure is everyone's goal. (Or no? Just mine? I'm fine with that.)
