There's A New Jeffrey Dahmer Doc Trailer & The Entire Thing Is So Unsettling

by Sophy Ziss

Good morning! Let's talk about murderers. Specifically, famous male serial killers with cannibalistic predilections, among their other horrifying attributes, who were also oddly charismatic and down to do TV interviews in the early 1990s. So, here we have Jeffrey Dahmer. The trailer for Oxygen's Dahmer on Dahmer: A Serial Killer Speaks docu-series has been released, and it's immeasurably creepy. The "TL;DR" for one of America's most notorious serial killers is as such: He sexually assaulted, dismembered, murdered, and cannibalized more than a dozen men and boys between the years of 1978 and 1991. After his arrest, he spoke about his crimes openly, honestly, and often to the press, including on-camera interviews with shows like Dateline. Dahmer was murdered by a fellow prison inmate in 1994. Just a light, positive story all around.

The trailer for Oxygen's Dahmer on Dahmer series does not shy away from any of this. It's not a sympathetic portrait of life gone awry; it's Jeffrey Dahmer's father, stepmother, and two of his surviving victims speaking about what it had been like to truly know him. The trailer includes footage of court testimony from victims' families, commentary from the investigating officers, an array of Dahmer's mugshots, and a hefty amount of Dahmer himself.

It's rare to have someone of Dahmer's caliber be so accessible to the press. To watch him, to listen to him account for his crimes, is absolutely bone-chilling. Dahmer on Dahmer promises to be a fascinating and terrifying look into the mind of one of America's most notorious serial killers. Dahmer was a trained Army medic, a skilled liar, and obsessed with preserving skin and bones. His home life was rough and he developed a drinking problem, but it is possible to survive these things without additionally thirsting for torture. By pairing early '90s video of Dahmer with newly-filmed interviews, perhaps Oxygen will offer more insight into his psychopathy. At various points in the trailer, more than one person calls him "evil," or the great "monster" of our time.

And 2017 also appears to be the Year of Dahmer. The movie My Friend Dahmer, which will be released on Nov. 3, is a biographical film that examines the killer's early life, based on author John "Derf" Backderf's graphic novel of the same name. Dahmer and Backderf grew up in Ohio, and attended high school together in the 1970s. Weirdly enough, the cast of My Friend Dahmer is incredible: Disney star Ross Lynch stars as the titular killer; Nickelodeon star Alex Wolff plays Derf; Vincent "Pete Campbell from Mad Men, oh, and also he's married to Rory Gilmore IRL" Kartheiser is the doctor that probably needs to take a closer look at Dahmer; and Dallas Roberts plays the future killer's father.

Dallas Roberts should instantly be recognizable to fans of series like Law & Order: SVU and its kid sister, Chicago P.D. In an arc that spanned multiple seasons, series, and years, Roberts portrayed a creepy, charismatic, homicidal surgeon who was buddies with, you guessed it, the disgraced New York Medical Examiner who doubled as the Law & Order answer to HBO's The Jinx. It's weird that the same actor is playing the father of Jeffrey Dahmer, right? At least, it isn't not weird.

Dahmer on Dahmer: A Serial Killer Speaks will premiere on Oxygen on Nov. 11, so you can keep your Halloween plans. If you're interested in learning more about one of the Midwest's creepiest criminals, My Friend Dahmer is available on Amazon. If that isn't enough, several half-hour interviews with the serial killer himself can be found on YouTube. Watch at your own risk, and maybe not right before a meal. Or ever.
