'Riverdale' + Wrestling = What Fan Fiction Dreams Are Made Of
If you're the sort of fan with a great passion for writing extremely niche Riverdale fan fiction, then prepare to add a new layer of odd wonder to your stories. On Saturday, it was revealed on Twitter that the cast of Riverdale attended a Lucha Libre wrestling event in Mexico City together. And wow, can you hear that? Inspiration is totally calling your name right now.
Lili Reinhart (Betty Cooper), Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl Blossom), and Ashleigh Murray (Josie McCoy) all shared the same fun photo on Twitter. In the picture, they're striking some badass poses at the CMLL wrestling event, alongside cast members Cole Sprouse (Jughead Jones) and Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge). Sadly, K.J. Apa (Archie Andrews) wasn't featured in the precious moment, but I can only hope that was because he was the kind soul taking the picture.
Honestly, I have a fervent imagination, so the equation of wrestling plus Riverdale is sending my brain into a sweet delirium right now. And before you start questioning my taste level, let me just remind you that a random plot involving wrestling isn't actually all that far-fetched for the Archie canon.
For instance, Riverdale's showrunner, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, wrote the incredible Afterlife With Archie, which re-imagined the universe gripped by the onslaught of a zombie apocalypse, and there's currently a fan theory that Riverdale may feature a zombie storyline of its own in future episodes. So, a wrestling angle? Sure, it sounds ridiculous. But it's also a really interesting perspective to consider in relation to the characters' current dilemmas.
OK, I can tell you're still not totally on board with this idea, but hear me out. Just pause for a moment and imagine how much of a wrestling juggernaut Cheryl or Veronica could be in the ring against anyone else in town. These are two characters who exhibit ferocious levels of strength, smarts, and drive, the likes of which would make for some startling entertainment between the ropes of a wrestling match. And goodness, just imagine their brawling ensembles — divine.
But then, there's the possibility for a matriarchal force of nature like Alice Cooper truly taking down Penelope and Clifford Blossom once and for all, and hell, maybe even her own husband, considering she threw that brick through the window at him on Thursday night's episode. I'd pay good money to see all of the above. And wouldn't it be nice to see Fred Andrews sparring with every character who's ripped him off or treated him badly so far?
Naturally, you could even have Jughead providing some delightful, if seriously dry, commentary for the whole thing. Pre-match entertainment could be provided by Josie and the Pussycats. And I don't know, Archie can just sit tight and eat a burger in the audience or something.
So, yeah. I might've officially lost it, you guys. But you have to admit, it's a pretty intriguing concept, even if it's one of the silliest things my brain has ever excitedly screamed at me. Just please, do me a favor? Make this fan fiction a reality, people. It needs to happen.
