Over the years, there have been tons of different trends — pubic hair included. From bearing it all to creating artistic designs, the world has experimented with it all. Glamour's evolution of pubic hair video shows all the different ways the world's below-the-belt hair trends have changed over the years. Let's just say that waxing isn't the the most painful on the list.
The video shows the herstory of female pubic hair from Ancient Egypt 3000 B.C. through the ever-evolving pubes of today. Believe it or not, pubic hair has had a very interesting history. From going au naturel in the Ancient Greek days to covering up with a vagina wig, — yes, that's a thing — there's a lot going on down there that you might not know about.
Of course, there are as many different ways to style your pubic hair as there are women on the planet. These are just recaps of some of the most well-known and documents styles of the era.
Before you watch, I should warn you of a few side effects. The video will have you 1) wondering why you never knew about some of these styles and 2) ready to try some new vag-trends.
It will also make you very happy that you didn't live in the Ancient Greek times. According to Glamour, "many Ancient Greek women removed their hair by plucking each hair individually." Um, ouch!
The video makes you wonder why these glorious pubic hair facts weren't shared before this. Odds are that you know what hair styles your mom rocked back in the day, but why is it that people don't talk more freely about their pubic art of choice?
According to Cosmopolitan, 51 percent of men and women said that they groom their public hair because it makes them feel more attractive. Only three percent said that it was because of the clothing they wore, which actually used to be a thing when the high-cut Baywatch bathing suit became popular in the 1980s, according to the Glamour video.
The publication's results makes perfect sense considering that the video showed that there are tons of different pubic hair styles of today. Glamour reports that everything from au naturel to the classic landing strip to something called the martini glass are all popular today. There's no one style to sum us all up, which is a beautiful thing.
So how do you know which public hair style is for you? Put simply, it's however you feel most comfortable. Although experts do have some suggestions, and conflicting opinions, when it comes to the best practices.
“There’s no question that being hair-free in that area is cleaner simply because of the fact that the hair does provide bacteria,” said Wendy Askew, M.D., an ob-gyn with the Institute for Women’s Health in San Antonio, to Women's Health.
Not everyone agrees with Askew, however, when it comes to grooming. Although some experts like Askew say that removing all public hair is the cleanliest route, others argue there's a reason for the bush.
"We have pubic hair for a reason. It forms a protective barrier for the skin," Jennifer Gunter, M.D., an ob-gyn and director of pelvic pain and vulvovaginal disorders at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco, told Women's Health in a different article.
She also adds that you should be very careful about what technique you use to shave down under. Waxing can cause burns, while shaving can cause serious cuts and other wounds. Just some things to consider when it comes to your precious locks of love.
When in doubt, do what feels natural to you. Whether that means bearing it all or not touching a thing, the choice is yours.
