Melissa Hastings Looks A Lot Like 'PLL's Red Coat
It's almost here. Pretty Little Liars fans are finally going to see who is underneath A's hoodie and learn the real identity of Charles DiLaurentis in the Season 6A finale. But while we may be getting quite a lot of information during this season's "Summer Of Answers," it now seems like the show is setting us up for a mystery that likely won't be revealed until after we untangle this Charles web. As seen at the end of Tuesday's episode "FrAmed," Red Coat is helping Charles take down the girls. Could the woman in the now infamous get-up have a very familiar face — possibly that of Spencer's big sister? That's right, I think Melissa Hastings is Red Coat on Pretty Little Liars, and there's photo evidence to support this theory.
It's surprising that Pretty Little Liars is bringing Red Coat back into the game. Season 4 seemed to suggest that it was actually Ali herself who was the girl underneath the coat, and not anyone nefarious or A-related at all. Apparently that's not the case: someone in a Red Coat has been posing as Ali, and it's likely not only Ali's alleged ally Cece. We have no idea who this person could be, but that doesn't mean that we don't have any clues. There have been plenty of photos of this Red Coat over the years, and from the looks of these pictures, only one person comes to mind: Melissa Hastings.
There are plenty of reasons to suspect that Melissa could be the one working with A. Many people now suspect that Wren is actually Charles DiLaurentis, and if you take a look at the evidence it makes perfect sense why he's the current front runner for Big A. If Wren really is Charles, then Melissa would make the perfect partner in crime. They already live together in England, are involved in an apparent romantic relationship, and have plenty of secrets between them.
But it's also the physicality of Red Coat that is making me suspicious of Spencer's older sister. Here's a brightened photo of Red Coat:
We don't have much to go on here (and I'm pretty sure that's the point), but Red Coat seems to be on the taller end of the spectrum (Melissa is 5' 7'') and has a similar body type to Melissa.
Of course, that begs the question of whether actress Torrey DeVitto would really be the person underneath the coat during these scenes. My answer to that is no, I don't think she would be — the show wouldn't risk a pic of Melissa underneath that hoodie getting out. However, I do think that it would cast someone to play the role with a similar physicality: when Red Coat is finally revealed, they would want the person under the hood to match up as best as possible to the one we have already seen.
We still have a long way to go in terms of finding out who is really underneath the red coat, but until then, I'm going to keep a close watch on the eldest Hastings girl. For more Pretty Little Liars theories, check out Bustle's podcast Taking This One To The Grave.
