Did 'We Found Love' Predict Calvin's Relationship?

by Maggie Malach

Years before Calvin Harris started dating Taylor Swift, he was busy finding love in a hopeless place. Well, sort of. Back in 2011, the DJ teamed up with Rihanna for "We Found Love," which became a smash hit. Harris gave fans major throwback vibes when he found his handwritten lyrics to the song, four years later! Considering he and Swift are constantly giving us couple goals, did "We Found Love" foreshadow their relationship?

Released on Sept. 22, 2011, "We Found Love" became the longest-running number-one single of the year. (It also happened to surpass "Umbrella" as Rihanna's longest-running number one single.) It sold 10.5 million (yes, million) copies, making it one of the most successful singles of all time. Not too shabby.

Musically, the electro-pop sounds echo the frantic, heady feeling of meeting someone and falling head over heels. (Even if that location happens to be a hopeless place.) There isn't a lot of variety in the lyrics, although the ones Harris found are pretty true to the final song. "Yellow diamonds in the light / Now we’re standing side by side / As your shadow crosses mine / What it takes to come alive / It’s the way I’m feeling / I just can’t deny / But I’ve gotta let it go / We found love in a hopeless place," the paper reads.

Although neither Harris nor Swift could have predicted they'd be dating four years after the song, did it foreshadow their relationship? Let's take a look.

They Found Love In A Hopeless Place

One listen to Taylor Swift's "I Know Places," and it's clear that being in the public eye brings the type of struggle in "We Found Love."

They're Letting It Go

Rihanna sings about not being able to deny the connection she has with her love. Swift is notoriously guarded with her private life, but by sharing photos of Harris, she's letting it go.

They Appear Smitten

"We Found Love" is about falling hard and Harris has made it clear that he has strong feelings for Swift.

"We Found Love" Had Insane Commercial Success

It broke some major records, something Swift continues to do in her own career.

The Song Was An Awards Darling

Again, the single faced the kind of success typical of a Swift song.

It's Kind Of Like "I Knew You Were Trouble"

Swift knows this subject-matter well and her video was even compared to the "We Found Love" video.

It's Happy-Go-Lucky

There's something about "We Found Love" that makes you want to push your worries aside and that's exactly what Swift seems to be doing in her relationship with Harris.
