Remember Fefe Dobson's "Take Me Away" Video?

by Kristie Rohwedder

The year was 2003 (or maybe '04?). It was a Friday night. I was babysitting my neighbors' kids. After my charges were tucked in their beds, I poured myself a glass of Vanilla Coke, plopped in front of my neighbors' TV, fired up Noggin/The N, and spent the rest of the evening watching a Degrassi: The Next Generation marathon. And that's when I saw it for the very first time: Nestled in between two episodes of Degrassi was the music video for Fefe Dobson's "Take Me Away", the second single off of her debut album. It was love at first sight and at first listen. I am forever grateful to The N for introducing both the video and the Canadian singer-songwriter to me.

Fast-forward to August of 2015: I finally mustered up enough emotional energy to watch It Goes There: Degrassi's Most Talked About Moments. (As excited as I am about Next Class, I'm still mourning the death of the TNG era, and the I anticipated the "best of" special would be a roller-coaster of a goodbye. I wasn't wrong.) As I waxed nostalgic about Emma's wedding perm and Marco's pet rabbit and Crellie, I suddenly remembered watching and hearing "Take Me Away" for the first time. It'd been a while since I'd revisited the video. Here's what I remembered: Dobson and her band perform the song in a room. Way to retain specific details, memory!

Obviously, I needed to fix this. So, I paused the Degrassi reunion special, pretended the glass of water I was drinking was Vanilla Coke, and pulled up the music video on my iPhone. My main takeaway: My memory really let the team down. Here are some of my favorite things from the video/the things that I can't believe I forgot about:

The Watercolor Backdrop

Wait, how do I make the walls in my apartment look like that? Is there a tutorial on YouTube?

Fefe's Eyeliner Game

BRB, going to try to recreate this look.

Fefe's High Kick

If you thought a pair of stiff denim jeans could stop the unstoppable Fefe Dobson from getting her kick on, think again.

This Flawless Shoulder Shimmy

I wish I looked half as cool when I shimmied my shoulders. Instead, I just look like I'm trying to shake invisible crumbs off of my shirt.

Fefe's Mid-Video Costume Change

This is early '00s tank top layering at its finest.

Fefe's Jump Kick

My hero.

Every Time Fefe Belts It Out

YESSSS!

When Fefe Hits The Camera With This Move

BRB, going to try to recreate this move in the mirror.
