There are a lot of things in this world that people can never seem to agree — but not all of them are as obvious as toilet paper orientation. So, in order to bring to light some of the lesser-known disagreements that seem small, but which might ruin friendships, Redditor CarLucSteeve asked the population of AskReddit, "Besides toilet paper roll side, what are some life's great debates?" But although it was to be expected that people would have some pretty strong feelings about these myriad debates, I don't think anyone was prepared for how strong those feelings were — or how many of them they had. Five hours after the question was posted, the thread has already generated over 2,000 responses.
The discussions cover a huge range of topics, too: What kind of peanut butter is the best kind, whether or not certain types of food should be kept in the refrigerator or the pantry, whether it's "pop" or "soda" — with, of course, a few token comments about whether toilet paper should pull out from the underside of the roll, or whether it should hang from the top (the answer, according to the patent for toilet paper, is over. Sorry, Team Under). Would these questions have stopped Aristotle or Kant in their tracks? Maybe not... but maybe yes. The minds of great thinkers are mysterious, indeed.
The thread is pretty amusing, as well as wildly relatable — because who hasn't gotten into an argument with someone about Macs versus PCs, hamburgers versus hotdogs, or boxers versus briefs? Check out 10 of the most timeless and divisive life debates as explained by Reddit:
1. Brownie Centers or Edges?
You know those brownie cups? They exist exclusively so we never have to eat dry, pointy brownie edges again. Obviously brownie centers. Next.
2. Cake or Pie?
I like this person who was kind of like, "Why are we even debating this? Obviously both, all the time." I like the way you think, Spanish-speaking Reddit user. I like it a lot.
3. Coke or Pepsi?
Or maybe just water?
4. iPhone or Android?
Sorry, Blackberry and Windows Phone users, but you all don't even seem to exist within this debate.
5. To Be or Not To Be?
I have nothing snarky to say about this one; we've been trying to figure it out since the beginning of consciousness, and somehow, we still haven't reached a sensible conclusion. Good luck figuring it out, friends.
6. East Coast or West Coast?
Easy: West Coast, best coast. So what if a earthquake is going to kill us all?
7. To Cut Sandwiches Diagonally or Horizontally?
I have no strong feelings about this one, but if you leave the crust on my sandwich, it's over. Seriously.
8. Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg?
My feelings about this one are of like my response to the question of being versus not being: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
9. Paper or Plastic?
Reusable bags made of corn!
10. "Netflix and Chill?" or Netflix and Chill?
This one wasn't actually on the Reddit thread; it's my own personal contribution to the discussion. Sometimes I want "Netflix and chill," and other times I just want to get caught up on Orange Is the New Black and actually chill. The world is a confusing place.
