Why Taylor Swift's Tumblr Is A Magical Place

by Moe Thet War

It’s hard to imagine Taylor Swift being not good at something, considering that she’s, ya know, taken over the world. And yet, in September of 2014 when she first joined Tumblr, the Queen of Everything posted the following SOS:

Taylor here. I’m locking myself in my room and not leaving until I figure out how to use my Tumblr. Well, I might leave for a second to get a snack or something but that is IT. I am FOCUSED. I have lots of questions, help me.

Of course, us being the loyal Swifties that we are, we came to her rescue, ready to offer her reassurance, assistance, our firstborn, etc. Thankfully, all she needed was some clarification:

Is re blogging what I’m doing right now and is this the best way to write back to someone? Also how do I get GIFS?How do you post them? How do I have one of those convos you always see screen shots of on Instagram? Is that by re blogging or is there some sort of conversation board on here?Overwhelmed. Taking deep breaths.

We patiently answered all her questions, grateful to be repaying her for everything she’s ever done for us, and we tearfully but proudly watched as she navigated her way during this new and exciting stage in her life. Now it’s nearly a year later, and Swift has taken on the Tumblr-verse as skillfully as she’s taken on everything else. She’s an expert on everything, from hashtagging to GIFs.

I love Tumblr, and I worship Swift. And when she joined Tumblr and it became clear that it was actually her, and not her team, who was handling her account, it was the best thing ever since the “You Belong With Me” music video. While Taylor Swift on Tumblr is awesome because adding Taylor Swift to anything automatically makes that thing awesome, here are the best things that have resulted from taylor swift dot tumblr dot com:

Swiftmas

In November and December of last year, Tumblr users who were self-proclaimed Swifties received a comment from on a photo or post from Swift: a single Santa emoji. While at first no one knew what it meant, people eventually started receiving calls from Taylor Nation — Swift’s own coven — asking for their contact information. The phenomenon was quickly titled “Swiftmas,” as each fan soon received personalized gifts and cards wrapped and put together in a giant box by Swift herself. The whole process was later combined into a video by Swift’s team, and to this day, it still leaves me in tears.

Valentine's Day, aka Swiftmas 2.0

Just when we were starting to recover from Swiftmas, Swift went ahead and put us into full-on freakout mode again around Valentine’s Day. It was the same deal as Swiftmas, except this time instead of a Santa emoji, it was the love letter emoji. And this time, Swift also reached out to international fans! Why did she do this? Because she is Taylor Swift, the sweetest, most generous, most amazing pop star/Tumblr BFF there ever was.

"No Its Becky"

A cautionary Tumblr post circulating the site about a girl who died because of drugs was accompanied by a picture of a high-school Swift, aka Becky. When someone pointed out that that was Swift, another user replied “no its becky.” Flash forward a few months later, and Swift steps out wearing a “no its becky” shirt (uncapitalized bad grammar and all), even joking about “rethinking her album cover” to one of her in said shirt. While we still don’t know when exactly Swift came across the post/had the shirt printed, it’s become so iconic that you can now get "no its becky shirts" on Etsy. Even David Karp, CEO of Tumblr, wore one when he met up with Swift at one of her concerts!

Her One-Of-A-Kind Hashtags

By now, everyone knows that Swift is an amazing songwriter (and if you disagree, then well, you know what the haters are going to do), but as it turns out, in addition to catchy or heartwrenching lyrics, she also has a knack for penning really original and hilarious hashtags. Just like a Swift concert isn’t a Swift concert without her introductory “Hi, my name is Taylor,” a Swift post isn’t a Swift post without its concluding hashtags. Some of her best works include but are not limited to: #CHECK FREE PEOPLE DOT COM BYE, #SERIAL KITTY NIGHT, and #COUPLES WHO 1989 TOGETHA STAY TOGETHA.

We Get Sassy Swiftian Explanations Straight From The Source

You know when you see weird or awkward photos of celebrities that just don’t make sense? And then you think, Gee it sure would be nice if I could just ask said celebrity what was happening here. Well, that’s exactly what Swift has done on multiple occasions ever since joining Tumblr. From explaining her savvy paparazzi-avoiding techniques to clearing up rumours about her music to naming the dance moves that she makes up as she goes (see what I did there?), we Swifties are the wiser for having all of our Swift-related ponderings that used to keep us awake until 2 a.m. now answered by the goddess herself.

We've Become BFFs

OK, so maybe she'll never invite one of us to walk the runway during "Style" and officially become part of her squad (although, hey Taylor, feel free to ask me any time!). But since she’s joined Tumblr, Swift has made a point to say in interviews and during tour speeches that we are her friends. And while a lot of celebrities might call their fans their friends, Swift actually means it. How? By doing things that friends do for each other, such as celebrating good news, offering support through tough times, offering fashion advice, or simply liking our selfies (which, BTW, is a major ego boost).

Sure, getting presents from Taylor Swift is exciting in itself, but the best part is that she took the time to individualize them like any good friend would. She knows people’s names and hobbies and checks up on us even in the middle of a sold-out world tour. Say what you will about her, but name me any other superstar that is as successful and famous as Swift who takes such an interest in her fans’ — oops, sorry, I mean her friends’ lives.
