It's been almost two years since Miley Cyrus released Bangerz and, naturally, her fans are excited for new music from the singer. We know Cyrus is back in the studio and she's even played new tracks like "Tiger Dreams." But when will she release her fifth studio album?
The short answer is: We don't know. However, by all accounts — both from Cyrus and her frequent collaborator Mike Will Made It — the Bangerz followup is definitely happening. “We work like yin and yang,” he told MTV News in June. “So, we just working on a lot of stuff. We’ve got like eight or 10 songs recorded. So, we’re just gonna pick the best songs to go on the album. It’s gonna be interesting though. Her whole sound is switching up. You know what I’m saying? It’s crazy.”
If Cyrus had eight to 10 songs completed in June, that definitely means that a finished album could be ready in the near future. This hope was encouraged in the September 2015 issue of Marie Claire, where readers are told Cyrus "intends to release [the album] free of charge soon." If that's true, it sounds like we won't even have to pay for the new music. (Update: A source clarified to Billboard that the album Cyrus referenced is her project with the Flaming Lips. "It’s not a Miley record,” the source said. “It’s a project she’s been working on with the Flaming Lips. It’s amazing, it’s incredible, it just needs to be understood that it’s not a typical, straightforward Miley record — we don’t want there to be confusion in the marketplace.")
Smilers got even more encouragement in mid-August when Cyrus posted an Instagram photo with the caption "Finishinnnggggg toucheZzzzz @mikewillmadeit." Could she be referencing the yet-untitled album? As I previously mentioned, she's performed new songs like "Tiger Dreams" and "The Twinkle Song," so we know she's been writing. Back in June, a song reportedly titled "Nightmare" hit the internet and was rumored to be a leak from the upcoming project.
Lastly, if a picture says a thousand words, Cyrus is giving us a lot to talk about. She's not shy about sharing photos from her studio sessions, including images of her rocking a onesie. And, of course, there was that clip Cyrus shared of herself singing in the studio.
So while the date of Cyrus' upcoming fifth album is still unknown, we can confirm she's working on new music. And when it does arrive, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.
