11 Of The Craziest, Weirdest VMA Outfits Ever

by Melodi Erdogan

The annual Video Music Awards red carpet is notoriously weird. Celebrities take the event's seemingly lax dress code as an opportunity to wear whatever they want. And sometimes, that results in some of the strangest ensembles ever seen at a red carpet event. And I mean ever.

I love watching awards shows, but a big part of my appreciation for them has to do with the red carpet and not the event itself. I throw on my most comfortable pajamas, grab some popcorn, and plop myself on the couch for that Sunday night, and while I usually drool over the gorgeous gowns and sigh over cute couples kissing for the paparazzi, it's a totally different story with the VMAs. Instead of sighing or drooling, I'm too busy wiping my eyes to make sure that what I'm seeing is actually real. From meat dresses to twerking, there really is no awards show like the VMAs. That also makes for quite some interesting style choices.

With the VMA's quickly approaching on Sunday, August 30, there's no doubt that this year is going to be just as outrageous as always. I mean, Miley Cyrus is hosting, after all. So in an effort to prepare you with what might be coming, and look back on red carpets past, here are 11 of the weirdest VMA outfits ever. The dress code for this event must be Bizarre Ensemble Required.

Rose's body is rockin' and all, but wearing only jewelry to one of the biggest awards shows of the year was an interesting choice.

2. Katy Perry And Riff Raff, 2014

This homage to the Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake denim outfit of 2001 was incredible. Now the question is... who wore it better?

3. Miley Cyrus, 2013

Remember this? If there's anyone with guts enough to wear a teddy bear body suit, it's Miley Cyrus. Not pictured: her famous twerk with Robin Thicke. Ahh, the good old days.

4. Nicki Minaj, 2012

In terms of the VMAs, 2012 was a pretty tame year, with the exception of Nicki Minaj. I totally applaud her for rocking that skin-tight jumpsuit, but with the hair, the hat, and the monster heels, it's a little too much. But you do you, Nicki!

5. LMFAO, 2011

Maybe LMFAO thought this was a good idea just because they took a lot of shots shots shots shots shots shots? OK, I'm done.

6. Katy Perry, 2011

Katy Perry during her "California Girls" era was especially colorful, from her purple tinted hair to her creative hats. Obviously she wasn't shy about getting dressed up for the VMAs that year.

7. Lady Gaga, 2011

You were waiting for this, weren't you? Lady Gaga's VMA outfits have got to be some of the most memorable. And this androgynous outfit easily makes the list.

8. Lady Gaga, 2010

Even though this gown is crazy, weird, and crazy weird, she looks great.

9. Lady Gaga, 2010

Ah, the infamous meat dress, which she sported for her performance the same year. It's hard to beat this on the "bizarre ensemble" scale.

10. Lady Gaga, 2009

Need I say more?

11. Rihanna, 2008

Rihanna is officially a style icon, but I'm sure on her way to the top she made a few style snafus . This lingerie-inspired, laced-up performance outfit was one of them.
