Receiving MTV's Video Vanguard Award is, to put it plainly, a massive honor. So what is it that makes Kanye West worthy of the Vanguard Award exactly? With predecessors like Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Britney Spears, and Beyoncé, you might surmise that it all comes down to things like talent, industry achievements, and record sales. But if you ask me, it has a lot to do with personal style. Artistic style, personal branding style, and most importantly, fashion over everything.

We hear so much about the Kardashian clan and their every move that sometimes Kanye is an afterthought. And Kanye doesn't like Kanye being an afterthought, I can imagine. Although I'm rarely interested in men's fashion, it's hard not to admire Kanye's style genius. With a wardrobe so chic, it's hard to imagine that it didn't play a role in receiving an award that basically deems you The Coolest, Most Successful Performer Around Ever. Clothes are a big deal, and considering Kanye's got his own successful fashion line — he thinks so, too.

Here are a few Kanye style moments that essentially prove his worthiness of MTV's Vanguard Award — via his clothing.

1. Velvet As A Wardrobe Staple

Ye isn't afraid to wear velvet, and often. You've got to admire a man who can rock a velvet jacket.

2. All Black — Because He's Happy (Inside)

Kanye hasn't yet given into Pharrell's hat obsession — but IMO, all black and fedora-less is a much cooler look.

3. All About Disheveled Denim

Kanye is all about the destroyed denim. Seriously, he wants his Levi's to look like he just fought a mountain lion. It's a look, OK?

4. Red Carpet King

He sure as hell can own a red carpet. Even going shirtless under a velvet suit jacket. Yeah, Kanye doesn't mess around.

5. A Fog Machine As An Accessory

No, this photo was not taken while Ye was emerging from the alien spaceship after fighting his way out during a freestyle battle using lines like "First, I'll disrobe you — then I'mma probe you." Or maybe it was. Anyway, he's styled flawlessly.

Amy Schumer obviously thought hilarity would ensue when she threw herself in front of Kim and Kanye. It was probably pretty awkward when they strolled on by, looking as calm and stylish as can be.

Keeping it classic, while still shockingly on-trend. Good move, Kanye.

You've got to be pretty confident and fashion savvy to give fur and camo a try. Especially if, for example, you are not hunting wild elk.

10. He Color-Coordinates With The Whole Fam

OK, it's not that difficult to coordinate when you're all wearing black — but it's the cuteness that counts!

A huge congrats to Kanye. And, personally, I can't wait to see what he'll be wearing on Aug. 30 to accept his award. I'm hoping for an "I <3 T-Swift" Ts-shirt plus a leather onesie. Or something. You know, fashion.
