How To Create A Plus Size Marty McFly Costume

by Alexa Tucker

If there was ever a year to go as Marty McFly for Halloween, this is it. In case you haven't heard, the Back To The Future character traveled in time to October 21, 2015 — two days ago today, and just 10 days before Halloween. Sure, you could buy the ensemble in a store, but a DIY plus size Marty McFly costume just sounds more fun, right?

You have a couple of options with a Marty McFly costume — you could go with his futuristic duds (self-tying shoes and a self-adjusting jacket, anyone?) or his classic '80s outfit. I, personally, am a fan of the latter for a couple of reasons. For one, you definitely wouldn't be cold. I mean, dude knows how to layer. Tee shirt, button up, denim jacket, vest... toasty, much?

Another great thing about '80s Marty is that you probably already have a few of those items sitting in your closet. And if not, they're all things you could actually use. Plus, there are so many optional ways to accessorize — put some headphones around your neck, tuck a skateboard (er, hoverboard) under your arm, and you're all set. Bonus points if you can find a friend to dress up as Doc Brown with you. Then again, though, Marty is pretty great all on his own.

Got a fluffy dog? Even better.

Here's what you'll need for your awesome plus size Marty McFly costume.

Puffy Vest

Frost-Free Quilted Plus-Size Vest, $24, Old Navy

Is this dusty red vest an exact replica of Marty's or what?

Denim Jacket

Style & Co Plus Size Denim Jacket, $38, Macy's

A regular denim jacket like this will do just dandy, but if you can find one, there's nothing that says '80s like acid wash.

Button-Up Shirt

Plus Size Long Sleeve No Iron Shirt, $50, Land's End

You could even borrow from the boys for this part of the costume, literally. Got a boyfriend or brother with a blue and white button-up dress shirt? Perfect.

Red Undershirt

Plus Size Boatneck Tee, $14, Target

Any maroon tee or tank will do for this element — just have a little bit peeking out from under your button-up of choice.

Old-School Jeans

590 Fuller Waist Boot Cut Jeans, $37, Levi

Slightly high-waisted classic jeans keep the outfit simple.

Nike Tennis Shoes

Women's Nike Stamina Lo shoes, $40, East Bay

Lucky for you, old school sneaks are super trendy right now.
