Tim Gunn Won't Be Buying Yeezys Anytime Soon
In the words of The Devil Wears Prada's Nigel, it's time to "Gird your loins" for the latest fashion feud. Following last week's highly anticipated Fashion Week finale, HuffPost Live interviewed Project Runway host Tim Gunn, who had some very harsh words for Kanye West and the latest Yeezy collection. Known for being the reality show's voice of reason, Gunn didn't hold back when asked about the highly coveted Yeezy clothing line and its outspoken designer.
"I think they're a bunch of dumb clothes," Gunn said. "Just basic pieces." OK, so Yeezy might not be the 62-year-old industry veteran's cup of tea, but in his years as a fashion educator and Project Runway mentor, the man has certainly come across all types of design aesthetics. As brutally honest as he was when it came to West's controversial line, Gunn was giving a genuine critique to a subject that he's an expert on. Somehow, this might just go over West's head, but come on, aren't we all just waiting for his rebuttal any day now? But if that won't get the rapper all heated up, Gunn also talked about West's wife and future FLOTUS Kim Kardashian and her famous family's style.
"When it comes to fashion, I say to people all the time, 'If you want guidance for your fashion, just consider this, if a Kardashian is wearing it — don't,'" Gunn said. "I think it's vulgar and I just think given the amount of public exposure that the Kardashians have to potentially be sending a message to people that 'you too can dress like this' — no."
But Gunn didn't stop there. When asked about model-of-the-moment Kendall Jenner, he said, "She may be a perfectly lovely young woman, I just feel that she’s tainted by the Kardashian aura of 'yuck.'" Gunn is certainly entitled to his opinion and I can't argue with his critique on Kanye West's clothing line, but something about the way he's unfairly picking on the Kardashian-Jenner women reeks of poor taste. And we all know that's a topic that Gunn should know better by now.
In light of his recent remarks, here are other recent Tim Gunn gems on pop culture:
Anna Wintour
“She can try to turn me to stone. I don’t think it will happen.”
Gunn has a long-running feud with Anna Wintour, which he wrote about in his 2010 book Gunn's Golden Rules.
Project Runway S14
“I hated it. I felt that other than a couple of designers, they weren’t working up to their potential. The whole thing was lackluster.”
After 14 seasons of the reality competition series, Gunn called this season of Project Runway as his least favorite. Ouch.
His Catchphrase "Make It Work"
Gunn says he's been saying "Make it work" long before the show aired. "It’s about problem solving. And it’s a skill that’s not just applied to design projects, but to how we navigate life."
