What Do Potterheads Think Of 'Fantastic Beasts'?

by Michelle Lulic

With it being nearly five years since the Harry Potter films graced the big screen, and now it is the moment fans have been waiting for: The very first look at J.K. Rowling's latest Wizarding World book-turned-film, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them . The highly-anticipated "prequel" of sorts follows the character of Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne) as he takes over New York City with his case full of "beasts" from the Wizarding World. A story that comes in accordance with the textbook Rowling wrote and published in 2009 that is based off of one of the books on Harry's reading lists during his first-year at Hogwarts. It's Wizarding history coming to life and — from the looks of the trailer — it seems as if this movie is going to make magic-inspired movie history (again) as well. And Potter fans seem to be loving the Fantastic Beasts trailer, of course.

And, as expected, as a result of the familiar spells, a brand-new look at witches and wizards in the United States, and even a somewhat familiar growl, the fan speculation and freak-outs were inevitable. From tweets of excitement to hilarious memes (yes, already), and even the creation of GIFs, the internet is more than ready for their Wizarding World history lesson come to life. The fans were sure to deliver on the morning of December 15:

And, of course, even J.K. Rowling herself has to comment on the new trailer as well:

But, as always, Twitter is revealing just a small piece of what we may find from the Harry Potter fandom when it comes to the release of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them trailer. Because, ever since the movie was even first announced, fans started freaking. And they did not hold back with their excitement and speculation. Plus, they made some pretty good points that I'm still curious about.

So, what can we expect from Fantastic Beasts that we haven't yet seen? Will fans love Newt's story as much (or almost as much) as Harry's? And can a Wizarding World taking place in New York actually work out? We'll just have to wait and see. For now, fans can just revel in the excitement that is the first look at the film just once more.
