Is There More To 'PLL's Big A Storyline?

by Kaitlin Reilly

If you're a hardcore Pretty Little Liars fan, then you probably know the struggle that is waiting for the new season of PLL to return. It was months ago that the series revealed the answer to its ultimate question: who is Big A? We now know that Charlotte DiLaurentis was the one pulling the puppet strings this entire time, and that she forged an entirely new identity for herself after spending most of her life as a patient in Radley. Charlotte laid all of her secrets out on the table in the Season 6A finale, and the girls finally got all of the information that they have ever wanted — or so we thought. Apparently, according to Pretty Little Liars showrunner I. Marlene King, there could be more to the story: In an essay for EW, King hinted that there may be more to the Big A storyline, and it's just the clue to spawn a thousand theories.

In the essay, King explained that she and the rest of the writers were the only ones who knew the big secret (who is Big A) but that, eventually, she spilled the details to Keegan Allen (Toby) and Troian Bellisario (Spencer). Now, she says, everyone knows what she knows — except, well, not really. Here's what she said:

[I]f you’re a Pretty Little Liars fan, after watching the last finale, you know as much as I do too… well almost. It’s PLL, so there is always more to the story.

There's no way to know what King really means by this, but because I'm never not overthinking this show, I'm going to assume that she mean that there's something we don't know about the Big A reveal. While I'm 100 percent certain that Charlotte really is A, that doesn't mean that everything Charlotte said is the entire truth. Here's what fans might not know yet about Big A:

1. Maybe Charlotte Is Connected To The N.A.T. Club

Oh, hey, remember those guys? We know that Ian, Garrett, and Jason were a part of this secret spying society, and that Ian may have been collecting information for someone else. There's no way that the videos that this club wanted to protect were Peeping Tom videos, as gross as they were. Could Charlotte have been the person Ian was making these tapes for, and if so, could she know about something a lot more dangerous than she let on?

2. Maybe Charlotte Is Still Out To Get The Girls

We know that Charlotte has been in an inpatient facility for the past five years, and that Ali considers her a changed person. We could believe that — but we can't forget that Charlotte is a master manipulator. (Thanks for the lessons, Mrs. DiLaurentis.) There's always the possibility that Charlotte could still want to hurt the girls, and is just biding her time until she's well enough to do it. If that's the case, perhaps there's something even crazier in the girls' past that we don't yet know about — something that Charlotte has been waiting to reveal until she can exact her perfect revenge plan.

3. Maybe Charlotte Knows Who Is After Ali

Maybe Charlotte only has good intentions for Ali and her friends, but there's a very real chance that she also happens to know who might want to do them harm. After all, Charlotte has been spying on the girls for years: wouldn't she pick up on someone who is lurking in the shadows? If this person is someone we already know (like, say, the mysterious Beach Hottie?) then Charlotte likely knows who it is as well. Fear of retaliation from the new Big Bad could be what is stopping Charlotte from revealing this person's identity to Ali.

4. Maybe Someone Is After Charlotte

Someone is dying in the second half of Season 6, and, if you ask me, there's a good chance that the person who dies could be Charlotte. Charlotte may have played A, but that doesn't mean that she is without enemies of her own: She could very well have made a lot of people angry in her pursuit of Ali and the girls. Could the "he" that we know is after Ali also have been after Charlotte?

This King quote could mean nothing... or it could mean everything. Either way, we have a lot more Pretty Little Liars secrets to uncover.
