How To Style A Scrunchie

by Sienna Fantozzi

Nothing encapsulates "2015" quite like '90s nostalgia, and we saw plenty of fashion trends from the decade resurge in a major way. There are the more obvious ones like overalls and crop tops, but the scrunchie also made a comeback this year. If you're looking for ways to style a scrunchie to help update it a bit from your middle school days, there are plenty of modern and fresh options that won't make you feel as long you're stuck in the past. It's about reviving, not necessarily reliving.

Though some might feel a little weird about bringing the scrunchie back, I for one am so not mad about it. They are much better for your hair because regular hair ties can cause breakage, so personally, I'd rather rock an obnoxious soft scrunchie and have healthy hair any day. But luckily for me (or rather, my hair), they are totally on trend right now. But if you're having horrible teen flashbacks at the mere mention of a scrunchie, don't worry, because you're going to update how you wear it so you don't look like you legit stepped straight out of the '90s. I gotchu.

Try these seven tutorials for better ways to style a scrunchie in 2016.

1. Fishtail

Fishtails are all the rage right now, so just secure yours with a scrunchie. Easy, peasy.

2. Half Up

Half up ponytails were big this year, but having the elastic hair tie so close to your front pieces could break them, so secure with a scrunchie instead.

3. Messy Bun

You know what would look even cuter? A scrunchie wrapped around it.

4. Low Ponytail

High pony + scrunchie = way too 90s. So rock a low ponytail, instead.

5. Side Braid

Style a super glam side braid, then secure it with a scrunchie. I guarantee you didn't wear it like this in middle schoool.

6. Sleek Bun

This is how you do an up-do with a scrunchie.

7. Puffed Ponytail

...or how you wear multiple scrunchies at once.
