Gel manicures may be one of the hottest trends when it comes to nails, but you can't discount the sheer lasting popularity of acrylic nails. Not only are they incredibly durable, but the customization is endless. However, before you take the plunge and book an appointment, these eight truths to know before getting acrylics are integral to making the most informed decision possible. While they're gorgeous and can be tailored to whatever you'd like, there are some important consideration for you to take.

While beautiful gel manicures may be all the rage, some — actually many — still embrace that acrylic life. Some of the most famous acrylic nail lovers are the Kardashian and Jenner families. These ladies love a good manicure, especially youngest of the brood Kylie. Kylie Jenner's nails have actually been the subject of much conversation considering that the color and design changes almost as often as the hue of the hair. Sister Khloe also seems to love a great acrylic manicure. In fact, she and Kylie have rocked matching nail colors in their past. While this family is clearly not the only one to share a love of nail art, they're probably the most well known.

If you're looking to rock acrylic nails like a Kardashian though, you'll need to know a handful of things.

Your Natural Nail Could Be Damaged

Acrylics aren't made out of plastic. Just ask anyone whose ever broken one off their real nail. You'll learn that the incredible hard liquid and powder formed acrylic is strong as hell. The chemicals used to create the acrylic, however, can damage your natural nail. You'll be asked to choose between a more cost effective formula and a more expensive formula. Opt for the highest quality possible to avoid nail damage.

You Should Prepare For Upkeep

Acrylic nails definitely require major upkeep. After about two weeks, you'll be able to see your natural nail growing in from the cuticle and even some nail growth around the sides of your acrylics. If you're not one for regular visits to a nail salon, this is definitely a truth you'll need to keep in mind.

They're Going To Get Longer

I was pretty shocked by this one when I first got my acrylics, but common sense should have told me it was true. The more your natural nail grows in, the longer your acrylic will get. If you like for your nails to remain short, you'll need to either file them yourself or be sure you hit the salon regularly.

You Have To Do Some Personal Upkeep

In order to prevent infections from creeping in under your acrylic, you'll need to be sure to clean them. It's a sad truth, but junk gets stuck under tips far too often. In order to be a good steward of your acrylics, be sure to clean them careful each day.

Removal Is A Long Process

Acrylics are made out of some super strong stuff, so getting rid of them isn't going to be easy. There's a lot of soaking in acetone that goes into removing acrylic nails so be prepared to be in the nail game for the long haul.

Acrylics Can Be Super Fun

One of the best aspects of acrylics are their customizability. Want them long? Talon-shaped? Short and fun? You can have it all with acrylics nails.

Picking Up Things Can Get Difficult

Oh, you dropped a penny? I'm so sorry. It's never coming back to you because picking things up with your acrylics is excessively difficult.

You'll Need To Budget

That upkeep mentioned earlier? It adds up. Be sure to budget for it so your acrylics don't start looking more than a little rough.

While there are a lot of things to consider when getting acrylics, always remember that they're incredible fun and can be insanely stylish. If you love talon-like nails, you'll love a great set of acrylics.
