If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who ya gonna call? Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Kristen Wiig, of course. After months of waiting, the first Ghostbusters teaser trailer has arrived and while it is technically just a clip promoting the official trailer set to drop March 3, it does feature your first look at actual footage of the film — and you guys, I am pretty sure the footage points to the return of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
There is definitely some sort of danger descending on New York in the teaser. The military and police have been called in and they are all aiming at an unseen threat. The Ghostbusters themselves are nowhere to be found, but if director Paul Feig decided to resurrect the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, then the Ghostbusters would be on a rooftop when he starts lumbering through downtown New York City. In the original movie, Dan Akroyd's Ray is on a rooftop when he tries to think of the most harmless thing he can, and ends up destroying his happy childhood memories of roasting marshmallows in the process.
It is hard to imagine the new Ghostbusters not tackling the most iconic scene in the original movie in one way or another. Maybe whatever it is that is menacing New York City this time around won't be exactly the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, but Feig is sure to echo the moment in his reboot. It simply has to happen. I mean, who doesn't want to see McCarthy, McKinnon, Jones, and Wiig toasting a skyscraper sized marshmallow?
For reference, here is the scene from the original 1984 Ghostbusters:
And here is the teaser for the all-new Ghostbusters hitting theaters July 2016:
Could the ominous tone and panic on the streets be pointing to a recreation of one cinema's coolest moments? I hope so, because if anyone can pull it off it is Feig and the amazing cast he has assembled. Maybe when the full trailer premieres this March, the new Marshmallow Man will be revealed. Until then, you can return to your regularly scheduled squeeing over the fact that this amazing reboot is actually happening.
