Maybe Luke & Lorelai Shouldn't Be Together

by Amy Mackelden

I am super excited that we'll finally find out what Lorelai, Rory, and the rest of the Gilmore Girls cast have been up to in the interim years since the show wrapped up in 2007. The Season 7 finale left us with copious amounts of questions, questions that we never thought we'd get the answers to. Thanks to Netflix, the four new episodes of Gilmore Girls that they're making will give us bonus time with all of our favorites and will, once and for all, tell us whether or not Luke and Lorelai end up together. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but does anyone else kinda hope that Luke and Lorelai aren't together in the Gilmore Girls revival? Because, if we're really honest with ourselves, there are about a million reasons why they shouldn't be.

Like all great TV romances, Luke and Lorelai were on-and-off-again like there was no tomorrow. For the first few seasons of Gilmore Girls, they were a classic will-they-or-won't-they couple, flirting over coffee and being generally sarcastic to one another. So, when the pair finally started a relationship, fans were relieved and excited. Luke and Lorelai seemed perfect for each other. But they're not, and I'm about to ruin your dreams forever.

When it came to dealing with real life, Luke and Lorelai were terrible at it. When Luke found out he had a daughter, April, he kept it a secret from Lorelai for two months. The pair even postponed their wedding, and Lorelai got so tired of waiting that she slept with her ex Christopher, which ended her relationship with Luke. Sure, sleeping with an ex because she was having problems with Luke wasn't Lorelai's finest move, but it happened because the romance wasn't strong. While Luke and Lorelai clearly have chemistry and care about each other a great deal, their ability to negotiate a romantic relationship was generally awful. Is there anything that leads us to believe that things would be better if they tried yet again?

Luke and Lorelai are undeniably one of the reasons that viewers of Gilmore Girls are so hooked on the show. There was a time when I, too, wanted them to be endgame, but now I'm not so sure. Chemistry is not a big enough reason for a couple to be together, and, while I realise that they're fictional characters, I'm incredibly invested in Lorelai Gilmore's future. I don't have a suitable suggestion of who else Lorelai should be with, but Lauren Graham has amazing chemistry with just about everyone. She's so amazing, and I want the best for her. The best, in my opinion, does not involve flakiness.

I love Luke Danes, and he's always been a great role model and father figure for Rory, Lorelai's daughter. But, when it comes to romance, you don't want to be second guessing someone's affection for you or their ability to commit to a relationship. That's why I hope Luke and Lorelai aren't together in the Gilmore Girls revivial. I'm sorry, but I think these two soul mates are better off as friends.
