9 Simple Hacks For Boosting Hair Shine

by Lindsey Rose Black

Want shiny hair and just can't seem to figure out how to get it? I promise it's possible, and these simple hacks for boosting hair shine are here to prove it! It's all about finding the right product and DIY strategies for you.

If you don't know where to start with treating your hair right, consider this advice from Mirza Botanivic, Eufora Global Educator and stylist at Ammon Carver Salon in NYC. He tells me, "Ideally you would chat with your stylists about ... problems you want to address ... If you go to the store, most of the shampoos and conditioners use the same chemical ingredients and thus only work temporarily to relieve the symptoms [of whatever hair challenge you're trying to address]."

To really make the point, he adds, "A professional stylist can recommend professional products with customized ingredients to target specific problems." Makes sense, right? And fortunately, many salons will schedule free consultations if you just call and ask for one!

Once you know what kind of products and DIY strategies should work for you and your hair, have fun testing out the hacks below. Prepare to consistently have the best hair day ever, every day! Don't blame me if you can't control the urge to #selfie as a result.

1. Quell Frizz With Dryer Sheets

According to RedbookMag, running a dryer sheet over frizzy locks will smooth them out thanks to the anti-static agents.

2. Apply Coconut Oil

Kirkland Organic Coconut Oil, $46, Amazon

Bustle's Emily McClure shared that you can swap traditional conditioner for coconut oil to get ultra-moisturized locks that shine hard.

3. Finish Your Shower With Cold Water

It might not be easy, but LivingHealthy advised finishing your shower with a blast of cold water because it "will close the [hair follicles] and reflect light better, adding shine."

4. Avoid Heat Irons

LadyLifeHacks pointed out that heat styling tools can often cause dry and brittle hair if overused. Try to go au natural a few times a week to let your hair naturally develop shine.

5. Get A Trim

Split ends can create a frizzy hair appearance, so snipping them off is one of the easiest ways to make things sleek.

6. Use A Boar Bristle Brush

Soft Boar Bristle Brush, $5, Amazon

Bustle's Elly Ayres recommends using a boar bristle hair brush to help "maintain shine by redistributing those natural oils." Who knew getting shine could be so simple?

7. Test Out Hair Oil

Nothing is as easy as spritzing your hair with a little natural oil for instant shine. My personal favorite is argan oil.

8. Try A Deep Conditioning Treatment

Algae Deep Conditioning Mask, $10, Etsy

A weekly deep conditioning mask can work wonders for hydrating your hair, giving it some seriously shiny love.

9. Guaca-fy Your Hair

Samira Asemanfar of The Broot, an all-natural hair mask bar in SoCal, explained to Allure, "avocados are natural deep-conditioners, which will give your scalp a little TLC." It might be sad to sacrifice an avocado for your head instead of your mouth, but the shine results are well worth it!
