Even Major 'GoT' Fans Might Not Know This

by S. Atkinson

So, you're a huge Game of Thrones fan. You've seen every episode at least thrice, you've read all the books, your Reddit theory got upvoted a bazillion times. So riddle me this: who is Game of Thrones ' biggest sex symbol?

I'm no mind-reader, but I'd hazard a guess that you'd opt for one of Game of Thrones' most obvious beautiful people: Esquire's Sexiest Woman Alive 2015 Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen); Carice van Houten (Melisandre), Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell); the puppy-eyed Kit Harington (Jon Snow) or even Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister). Beyond that, maybe you'd hazard a guess at a character holding a more minor role. After all, Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) was pretty easy on the eye. Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Nymeros Martell) definitely could have been on the show a little longer and no one would have winced in disgust, you know? And Lena Headey's whole icy dominatrix thing is pretty great too.

But no. You'd be wrong on every count. Honestly, I don't think I would have known this had I not come across a German-language IGN article on former roles of Game of Thrones' stars. You guys...the Game of Thrones star who was once an internationally-renowned sex icon is none other than Olenna Tyrell — Margaery Tyrell's grandmother.

I know Margaery, my mind's reeling, too. Because, obviously, Olenna Tyrell is played by none other than Diana Rigg. Back in the day, Diana Rigg was the hot actress of the time — she played Emma Peel, a lovely and stylish assistant on the '60s spy-fi adventure The Avengers. And it didn't stop there: Rigg was the dictionary definition of cinematic foxiness in her role as a Bond girl, playing the only wife Bond has ever had in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). So, in other words, this lady, the most cunning grandmother in all of Westeros:

Used to be the '60s equivalent of Angelina Jolie-circa-Lara-Croft:

Why does nobody know this? Why isn't this ever talked about? Mind, blown.
