How 'The Legend Of Tarzan' Soundtrack Stacks Up

by Jenn Ficarra

There's a new Tarzan movie swinging into theaters soon, and along with big action thrills and shirtless Alexander Skarsgard, I'm excited to get to know The Legend of Tarzan soundtrack. Let's be real: it's hard for any Tarzan-centric album to stakc up to the soundtrack for Disney's Tarzan, which is just out of this world, beyond comprehension, blow-your-socks-off brilliant. I mean, it's Phil Collins. How could it not be? That soundtrack is so beloved that its songs were even used in the musical version of Tarzan. Needless to say, The Legend of Tarzan has a lot to live up to when it comes to its choices in music.

The Legend of Tarzan, out July 1, is a live-action movie that picks up a few years after Tarzan and Jane have left Africa for England. In the film, Tarzan and Jane head back to Africa, only for Jane to get kidnapped and Tarzan to come to her rescue. It's an action-packed, heart-pounding movie, and it's pretty clear that this isn't the type of film to have an Ariana Grande song playing out over romantic moments or a Bastille song echoing out over animal battles. So, what could be expected from the new movie's soundtrack, then?

Right now, there are a few songs listed on the Legend of Tarzan soundtrack:

  • "Opar Advance" written and Produced by Rupert Gregson-Williams & Lebo Morake and performed by Zoe Mthiyane.
  • "Isikuti" Arranged by Josh Ponte, George Fiawoo, Sunny Nwachukwu, Tania Nwachukwu and Rose Aloke
  • "Aye We Mae" Written by Glacéia Adele Henderson
  • "Baba Baba Shi Baba" Arranged by Josh Ponte, George Fiawoo, Sunny Nwachukwu, Tania Nwachukwu and Rose Aloke

From the looks of it, most of the songs are pretty traditional and instrumental. Definitely a different feel than that of Disney's Tarzan. But there is also one other song listed on the soundtrack — written and performed by Hozier, it's a tune called "Better Love." The song is a sexy tune that feels like both a ballad and uptempo jam that will make you feel things you didn't know you could feel. As of now, it's unclear where in the film the song will be placed, but if the current track list is any indication, "Better Love" might be saved for the credits.

It's clear that the soundtrack for The Legend of Tarzan is strikingly different from Disney's Tarzan soundtrack. But sometimes, different isn't bad, but actually pretty interesting. I'm fully ready to see the new movie, and experience the sight of a naked Skarsgård swinging through the jungle.
