Now that the Republican National Convention is behind us, it's time to focus on the 2016 Democratic National Convention, which officially kicked off Monday, July 25 and will close on Wednesday, July 28 in Philadelphia. But, enough about the minor details, because it's time to discuss who is at the event, like, maybe the star and creator of Girls? I know you're dying to know, so is Lena Dunham at the DNC?
Seriously, what kind of question is that? Of course Dunham is at the DNC. For some time now, the Golden Globe-winning actor has openly voiced her support of Hillary Clinton. One of the reasons Dunham is at the DNC is because she was selected as a speaker for the event, alongside many other celebrities. When she announced the news, you could tell the 30-year-old writer was living the dream. Alongside a photo with her fellow Clinton supporter and DNC speaker, America Ferrera, Dunham wrote,
My soul sister @americaferrera and I are headed to the Democratic National Convention to speak as a team in support of @hillaryclinton. The honor! The thrill! We promise not to copy off Michelle Obama's homework, dreamy as she is #imwithher.
Yes, she also got a dig in there about Melania Trump's RNC speech. Obviously, her love of Clinton means she wouldn't miss an opportunity to not only speak on behalf of the possible first woman POTUS, but to also showcase why she feels so strongly about the presidential candidate.
Dunham has made it clear from the get-go that she's not voting for Clinton because she is solely a woman, but because she feels she is best for the country. "Yes, I admit, I’m pretty worked up about the possibility of a woman President: it’s something I thought was impossible, maybe even illegal, when I was a little girl," she wrote in a piece for TIME in April 2016. "But one thing I’m not, as I’m routinely told, is ill-informed or ignorant — supporting Hillary only because of our shared anatomy. I have no plans to blindly follow my uterus to the nearest polling station."
So, why is she voting for Clinton? Well, there are a number of reasons, but as she shared in TIME, Dunham admires Clinton's fight for women's reproductive rights and women's rights in general, her fight to end gun violence, and her fight against racism. If you didn't pick up on it from the above Instagram or her powerful quote, Dunham wholeheartedly believes Clinton is what's best for the nation.
Isn't it obvious for Dunham to be at the DNC? I have a feeling she wouldn't miss it for the world, which is exactly why she's in the City of Brotherly Love on Clinton's behalf.
