'Now You See Me 2' Director Talks Gender-Swap

by Taylor Ferber

No one would deny the Now You See Me franchise has a top-notch cast backed by some serious mind-game badassery. Among actors like Dave Franco, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, and Mark Ruffalo, Isla Fisher held it down in the first installment, and Lizzy Caplan was totally bril at playing the shameless, geeky magic nerd in the second. NYSM 2's magic supervisor and mentalist Keith Barry calls Caplan's portrayal of newcomer Lula "rock and roll." Director Jon Chu (G.I. Joe: Relation, Step Up 2: The Streets) says he loved having her because "she owned it." But what if the franchise had even more Lizzy Caplans?

When sitting down with Chu and Barry while celebrating the digital release of the film, I asked what the deal was with the male-dominated magic world and what the movie would be like with more females. While Chu explained that each character is so carefully-tailored to the actor, they give hope for even more females in NYSM films to come. I also had them elaborate on thoose secret on-set dirty jokes provided by Caplan and Harrelson, as well as who had magic down pat, who struggled, and yes, who threw up on set. Check it out below.

Now You See Me 2 is available now in digital HD and will be on Blu-Ray and DVD September 16.
