Bill Hader's Latest Role Will Delight '90s Kids

by Allie Gemmill

What could possibly be better than Bill Hader IRL? Answer: Bill Hader making an appearance in one of the most hotly anticipated films of 2017. No, Hader won't be popping up in the next MCU jam — rather, Hader will be joining the Power Rangers cast as Alpha 5, the adorably fretful robot tasked with helping everyone's fave '90s ninjas in their mission to defeat Rita Repulsa. Just the mere mention of another big name joining this film makes me giddy. Maybe it's because the Power Rangers will forever be my jam, maybe it's because I'm excited to see how the latest film will get updated — I don't know. All I know for certain is that this cast is unstoppable and will guarantee big returns at the box office.

Just to bring you up to speed, Hader is not the only recognizable face in the Power Rangers crew. He will be joined by Elizabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston, Becky G, as well as soon-to-be-household names Naomi Scott, Dacre Montgomery, Ludi Lin and RJ Cyler. For anyone still doubting whether this reboot of the classic franchise will be making a big cash grab rather than serving up something seriously good, I think your fears should be assuaged; this isn't stunt casting, it's smart casting. Hader will only up the ante with his comic contributions as the eternally fretful and funny Alpha 5.

Hader is, at his core, a character actor. His time on Saturday Night Live, and in his current role in the IFC show Documentary Now! are just two prime examples of how Hader is able to create complete, unique, and out-there characters at the drop of a hat, while also making them feel relatable and accessible. Alpha 5 is the perfect mix of high strung, helpful, a tad bit silly — Hader can go silly and endearing (Stefon from SNL ), and he can get amusingly animated and over-the-top (see: Fear from Inside Out ), so this is no problem for him.

The only question left to ask is: Will we get to hear Hader yelp Alpha 5's classic "Ay yi yi!" catchphrase?
