'Fifty Shades' Is Going To Get A VR Experience

by Allie Gemmill

As if things couldn't get steamier for the Fifty Shades franchise, it now appears that a Fifty Shades Darker VR experience will be available as part of the marketing materials for the upcoming film. Whoever's dark, twisted, perfect idea this was, remind me to send them a "Thank You" basket because this sounds like an absolutely genius bit of marketing. You may be wondering, though: What would a Fifty Shades Darker VR experience look like, exactly? Like — what would the creators be allowed to include without it actually becoming too — ahem — sexy? I have never been more curious about a piece of movie promo material in my life. However, it seems that, from the description director James Foley recently gave, according to EW, this Fifty Shades Darker experience is definitely going to satisfy a lot of fans' curiosities, too.

As Foley explained to an audience at the VR On The Lot discussion at Paramount studios: "[T]here’s marketing materials for behind-the scenes [of Fifty Shades Darker], where after we finished shooting for the day, the actors would stay over and VR people would re-create a facsimile of the scene.” While Foley stayed mum on exactly which scenes were getting the VR treatment, I don't think we're going to get an virtual recreations of tame pancake-making moments or hardware store visits.

One thing that is genuinely intriguing is the using of virtual reality for a film as carnal and sexy as Fifty Shades Darker. The trailer has been building up the actual film as a sexier, tension-filled film, so what does that mean for the virtual reality aspect? What would the participants actually be able to see?

The mere idea of the existence of the Fifty Shades Darker VR is enough to make me want to see the film. Who am I kidding, though? Seeing the film was never up for debate.
