So, you've stood in line, cast your vote, and made your voice heard. Now what are you supposed to do until the polls close and the results start coming in? Well, I've put together a Hillary Clinton girl power playlist for all you supporters out there on Election Day who, y'know, value inclusivity and their basic human rights. Because how else will you spend your day? Just sit there with your hand in your mouth, biting your nails, and hyperventilating? It's one option, and I've already explored it multiple times. But if you're looking for something to take your mind off this glorious democratic culmination of months of stress, you've come to the right place.
This playlist is full of the catchiest, most danceable tracks out there from feminist heavy-hitters like Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, and Rihanna. I've teared up within seconds of each of these songs starting, so you genuinely need this in your life. It's the perfect collection of songs to listen to, whether you're stress-dancing around your apartment in a "The Future Is Female" sweatshirt and underwear (me) or walking along the street making extended eye contact with and smiling at every woman you pass (also me). In short, it's exactly what you need on this Election Day.
Just know that, when you're listening to it, I'm walking right beside you, doing a combination of fist pumping and ugly-crying to the beat.
1. "Fight Song" — Rachel Platten
"I might only have one match, but I can make an explosion" is a pretty apt metaphor for the voting process. You are the one match, Hillary Clinton's election is the explosion. We've all been fighting so hard for so long, and now the end is in sight.
2. "Unstoppable" — Sia
Tried to listen to this walking down the street, but I got so choked up at, "I put my armor on, show you how strong I am" that I knew I didn't stand a chance for the rest of the song.
3. "Watch Me Do" — Meghan Trainor
If dreams come true, then Hillary Clinton will lip sync to this while moon-walking through the White House.
4. "Handle Me" — Robyn
I know you like to grab things, Donald Trump, but there are two things of mine that you'll never get your hands on. I think you know what the first one is, and the second one is my vote.
5. "Confident" — Demi Lovato
For anyone feeling stressed about the results, I prescribe two listens of this power-anthem, preferably while strutting somewhere in your highest heels. Leather jacket recommended, but not required.
6. "BO$$" — Fifth Harmony
You had me at "Michelle Obama, purse so heavy gettin' Oprah dollars", and then you never lost me.
7. "Ain't Your Mama" — Jennifer Lopez
Just a reminder to all the gentlemen out there who need it that it's time to start taking care of your damn selves. To quote Jennifer Lopez, "When did you get too comfortable?" (And, to the ones who don't need it, thank you for being allies; we're all too good to accept anything less than equality for everyone.)
8. "Run The World (Girls)" — Beyoncé
BRB, sobbing.
9. "Shake It Off" — Taylor Swift
It's been an insane election process, and it's finally time to shake it off and get to work.
10. "Ain't Been Done" — Jessie J
Truly, every lyric in this entire song is gold and weirdly applicable to this election, so it's impossible to pick one. Listen to the whole thing and see for yourself, but be warned that it might inspire spontaneous cardio workouts. It's that powerful.
11. "Diamonds" — Rihanna
I knew I wanted a Rihanna song on here, but I wasn't sure which one... and then I started playing "Diamonds" and immediately imagined all the little girls in America watching this historic election go down and being invited to "shine bright like a diamond." Whoops, I'm not crying, you're crying.
12. "We Can't Stop" — Miley Cyrus
No, you don't get it: we literally can't stop, and we won't stop until we get everything we deserve. And, after Election Day, if all goes well, it will be our Party, and we can do what we want.
13. "Bulletproof" — La Roux
This is for anyone who's ever catcalled me on the street or dismissed my opinions or tried to tell me how to feel or any number of other small indignities that add up. But they don't matter on Election Day, because we're (hopefully) about to elect our first female President.
14. "Work B*tch" — Britney Spears
In the immortal words of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, "b**ches get stuff done", and that's exactly what our girl is gonna do in office.
15. "Roar" — Katy Perry
Like Katy Perry, "I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath, scared to rock the boat and make a mess. So I sit quietly, agreed politely." But hey, guess what — those days are super behind me, and hopefully you too. The world is about to hear us roar.
16. "Fighter" — Christina Aguilera
The only nice thing I can say to people trying to take away fundamental human rights from Americans is "thank you." Because it truly does make me that much stronger and make me work a little bit harder, so sleep with one eye open.
17. "Survivor" — Destiny's Child
I was torn between this and "Independent Women, Part I", but, ultimately, I chose this one because I want to sing it directly into Donald Trump's face the moment he has to deliver his concession speech. (Sorry, I meant "rambling concession rant.")
I listened to all of these in a row, and now I'm some kind of fire dragon who can simultaneously do anything, but also weeps at the slightest reminder about what we're going to make happen on Election Day.
