A 3-Hour Spoken Word Album? Sounds Reasonable

by Lia Beck

In news that will make you say, "Oh my god!!! Oh wait... this makes total sense," Kanye West plans to release a spoken word album that will reportedly be three hours long. The album is said to include topics such as Kim Kardashian and the environment. If this sounds a little strange, keep in mind that this is all based on a conveniently chatty source and not on Kanye West actually confirming that there will be a three-hour long album of himself talking. But also keep in mind that Kanye West releasing a three-hour long album of himself talking sounds totally reasonable.

According to a source who spoke with The Sun,

Kanye loves the sound of his own voice and this will be the ultimate in self-indulgence. He has very strong views on everything from music and art to politics and the environment. He's forever recording his opinions on tape. He says he's doing it for posterity and thought about turning them into a book or even donating them to a museum.

It's true that West has a lot of strong opinions on a variety of topics from the media to interracial relationships to, my personal all-time favorite, leather jogging pants, so he undoubtedly has a ton of material to work with. It does sound extreme that he would donate his self-recording rants to a museum, but the album thing, yeah, I could see that.

Spoken word is usually poetic, but this report makes it sound like West will literally just be talking about stuff with no rhyme or reason. And he usually uses quite a bit of rhyme in his work, so this is particularly disconcerting. The source continued, "Kanye likes to push the boundaries and thinks this is very groundbreaking. He's hoping it'll win him a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album." Hmm... I dunno. That doesn't sound like Kanye. We all know he thinks he's the best, but he wouldn't openly say that he wants an award, he would just complain about not getting it later. And then that would become his second spoken word album.

If West's three-hour long album isn't enough for you, the source claims West already has a solution for that. "What's more, he's planning on making 24 hours of his speech recording available to download so fans can listen to his views round the clock." Okay, that is just too much. There is no way he's planning this. Will he read about the idea online and then decide to do it? Possibly. Has he thought of something similar to this before? I wouldn't be surprised. Did he confess his amazing idea to just anyone knowing that sources could end up revealing the information? Hell to the no. This idea reeks of Kanye West, but he would never be so upfront about it. If a three-hour Kanye West spoken word album ends up getting released (or his recordings donated to a museum), I feel confident that he would take it so seriously that it would never be revealed this way.
