She's Just Half of the Next Fashion Dream Team

by Mary Avant

Put Angelina Jolie next to nearly anyone on the red carpet, and nine times out of 10, she wins hands down in even the fiercest fashion face off. After all (amazing talent and passionate, dedicated activism aside), this is a woman whose gorgeous face is rivaled only by her mastery of beyond-perfect pantsuits, majestic beaded ensembles, and one of the most marvelous (and leg-revealing) gowns I've ever seen hit the red carpet.

So it’s saying something when fashion critics and Jolie fans alike are having a hard time deciding between which leading lady — Jolie or lovable starlet Elle Fanning — took home the fashion crown at Thursday's first big event to promote their upcoming, dark Disney film Maleficent . My answer: It's a clear tie. And together, they make one of the most high-fashion dream teams you could ever picture on the red carpet.

Hitting the event at Kensington Palace in London on the arm of longtime love and soon-to-be-hubby Brad Pitt, Jolie absolutely stunned in a custom-made Atelier Versace gown that was just as pretty from the front as it was from the back. With wide, plunging V-necks on either side of the gown, the gorgeously draped, Swarovski crystal–drenched gown featured sheer sleeves and a subtle, over-the-shoulders cape that the Disney villain herself would be envious of.

Though the loose-fitting, flowing fit and dark, dramatic hue are nothing new for Jolie, it felt almost refreshing and novel to see the star bring the eerie, elegant essence her evil character promises to deliver on screen to the red carpet — and in such a luxe, high-fashion way, to boot.

Fanning — a young star who, during her first few years in the spotlight, has become a veritable muse for quirky designers like Rodarte and Miu Miu — captured the spirit of her innocent, on-screen character at the event as well, and looked beyond beautiful doing so in a fit-for-a-princess Georges Hobeika gown. The strapless, pastel yellow couture creation featured a fitted bodice and dramatic, full pleated skirt, both of which were covered in breathtaking beaded embellishments.

Finishing off her fantastical look with a delicate, yellow floral crown — whose pink satin ribbon tumbled down the back of the gown — a rosy-pink eye shadow, and not a single other accessory, the actress looked like a vision straight from a story book (one Katie Holmes would have been wise to emulate at this year’s Met Gala).

If Jolie and Fanning are already getting this glamorous for a private event — which, keep in mind, wasn't even one of the film's premieres — I almost can't contain my excitement over what this dreamy duo will deliver once Maleficent's press tour really kicks off. One thing is certain though: Their style will be a total dream come true.
