How To Watch 'OINTB' Sans Netflix

by Kaitlin Reilly

Are you emotionally preparing yourself for another season of Netflix's incredible prison dramedy? Season 2 of Orange Is The New Black is officially live and if you haven't finished binge watching last year's breakout web-based drama then I'm really not sure what you've been doing with your life. (Perhaps you were too busy catching up on House of Cards instead.)

For those of you who need a refresher course, Orange is the New Black — which is loosely based on Piper Kerman's memoir of the same name — is about Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a New York City woman who is sentenced to 15 months in federal state prison for transporting drug money for her drug smuggling then-girlfriend. Piper, whose job before heading off to the Litchfield Penitentiary involved making making and selling fancy soaps, doesn't exactly get off to the best start with the other inmates — particularly her Alex (Laura Prepon), the ex-girlfriend whose testimony put her in prison in the first place.

Though the show focuses on Piper's adjustment to prison life, Orange is the New Black is also a window into the lives of the other women within the prison. Through flashbacks, we get to see how each of these women whom Piper interacts with ended up in the Litch. These women include Red (Kate Mulgrew), the cook whose affiliation with the Russian mob put her behind bars; Miss Claudette (Michelle Hurst), who is convicted of the murder a the man who abused one of the children in her immigrant cleaning service ring; and Sophia (Laverne Cox), a transgender woman who gets busted using stolen credit cards. The show features some of the most complex female characters that you'll ever see on television (or, as it is here, "TV-on-the-web") making it easy to see why people can't wait to call in sick and watch Season 2 on Netflix all day.

But what if you don't have a Netflix account? You can still watch the show, but if you're looking to see it all, you'll have to shell out some cash. Here are the two ways that you can catch up on Orange is the New Black if you feel weird about stealing your roommate's Netflix password.

Buy the DVD Box Set

You can purchase the DVD of Season 1 of Orange is the New Black from Amazon for $27.99. There are 13 episodes in the season, which means that you'll pay $2.15 per episode of the Netflix series. That's not terrible, considering that you'll have the series forever and can play it on a big screen without any fancy HDMI cables. However, when you consider that the price of one month of Netflix will cost you $7.99 (or $0.61 per episode!) it might be worth it to invest in a month or two of service instead.

Download Some Episodes From iTunes

Do you want to take Orange is the New Black on your iPod? You can currently download Season 1 of Orange is the New Black via iTunes... for a price. That price is $2.99 for a SD episode and $3.49 for an HD version and it's only available in the Australian version of the iTunes store, so... there's that. The price for Season 1 of Orange is the New Black is currently $32.99 SD, which equals out to $2.50 per episode. Kind of pricy compared to $0.61, right? There's also no guarantee that Season 2 will be on iTunes in the near future — Season 1 wasn't added to the Australian store until October of 2013, despite the first season of the show premiering on Netflix in June of 2013.

Here's the truth: Without a Netflix account, watching Orange is the New Black (legally, anyway) won't be cheap or easy. Investing in a Netflix account is your best bet for watching this awesome show... and it's totally worth it.
