Why Did "Joult" Split Up for a While There?

by Arielle Dachille

Like every famous couple, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult have their own compound word: “Joult." And it’s time you started using it. Joult has been a thing since Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult started dating in 2011, but there was a period of time when the two were broken up. We can breathe a sigh of relief, though, because, at the moment, Joult is still intact. Still, we can’t help but wonder why Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult split up for a while there in 2013. Was it something totally crazy and scandalous? Did the two just get bored of being so mutually cool and relatable?

Actually, the reason for their breakup was totally reasonable.

In her interview in June’s Marie Claire, Lawrence talks about how she and Nicholas Hoult manage their long-distance romance. It’s pretty intuitive actually. They have a system. Nicholas Hoult is a UK native, and Lawrence lives in the States. When they’re working in the same city, they’re together, and, when they’re not, they give each other the space they need. Because the two are co-stars in the X-Men franchise, they have the luxury of spending long periods of time together on set. However, both actors have extremely hectic lives and busy careers, so they need to respect each other’s boundaries.

Lawrence told Marie Claire,

When we're busy, we agree to mutually ignore each other. Not completely, but neither of us gets mad when the other doesn't text back or call. Life's super busy. Obviously you know what they're doing, and you trust them.

From Lawrence’s statements, we can posit that the two put their relationship on hold because work went totally bonkers. Their breakup came in the midst of a huge career surge for Lawrence. In 2013, American Hustle had just been released, as well as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. She barely had time to sit down and breathe, let alone Skype with her boyfriend who lives a quarter of the way around the world. Meanwhile, Hoult was likely wrapped up in his own promo work for Warm Bodies which also came out in 2013. Once things settled down later that year, the two were back on.

Keeping up a long-distance relationship is difficult to begin with. Sometimes, preserving a great relationship takes some time apart. Taking this break was apparently just what Joult needed, because they’re back in action and ready to dominate. Long live Joult!
