Janelle Monáe's New Video Is The Ultimate '90s Jam

by Cherise Luter

Janelle Monáe is a genius. Her under appreciated musical talent spans just about every genre from swing and soul to jazz and funk, now she's bringing back classic '90s R&B with her new song "Electric Lady" and the ultimate throwback video. If you grew up in the '90s, or at least appreciate the era, you must see this music video.

The song's infectious beat would have been at home on '90s radio, so it is no surprise Monáe brought the same feel to her video. Dressed in a crop top, leggings, and quilted varsity jacket, Monáe exits her home and enters 1996 with all the classic trademarks there to greet her: A low-riding cadillac, tricked out bikes with banana seats, Criss Cross jump jumpin’ and humpty humpin’ at the college house party, the blue light bathed breakdown. A virtual cameo by T-Boz and Monica tops it off. The only thing missing was Snoop Dogg bursting through the doors in his flannel button down spitting a remix of Gin & Juice.

Oh, but the clothes steal the show. From the moment you see Monáe and her crew decked in their '90s finest, you know it is going to be a fun ride. They hit the party and the blasts from my fashion past just kept coming.

1. The Crew

This shot and their styling is straight out of the hip hop rule book.

2. The Hair

High permed ponytails, side swept curls ponytails, slicked down side ponytails — the ponytail ruled the '90s.

3. Crop Tops and Jackets

They must have cleaned out every H&M and American Apparel for 30 miles.

4. Head Scarf (with Overalls)

We all did it, don't be ashamed.

5. Dwayne Wayne Glasses

Ahhhh I am so loving her bringing these back.

6. Salt 'N Peppa

Two girls dressed in all black with gold chains.

And here is the video. Enjoy!
