Delena = Dunzo

by Christine DiStasio

I really don't think I can handle this right now — mostly because I still haven't recovered from Damon's death in the Vampire Diaries Season 5 finale. And now Julie Plec and The CW could be planning to take away the possibility of Delena in Season 6, too? They're endgame, I say, and endgame means that they're untouchable — so step back, executives. The Vampire Diaries Season 6 will premiere on Oct. 2 and apparently, there's a chance that Damon and Bonnie, or "Bamon," will hook-up. Which really might just be the final nail in the coffin for everyone's favorite 'ship, Delena. So get your Nina Dobrev-esque sob-cry ready.

During TVD's panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2014, Plec acknowledged that Damon and Bonnie's relationship in the TVD novels was a huge part of the story that the CW series hadn't gotten to yet. And apparently, Bonnie and Damon getting zapped from The Other Side was all part of a huge plan to set the ball in motion on that relationship. The showrunner told E!'s Kristen Dos Santos, "we wanted to service the Bamon relationship from the books," by essentially trapping them in an inescapable situation together so that they'd be forced to bond — even though they've always hated each other. Sounds like a great circumstance to start a relationship, huh?

But the idea of these two characters that have hated each other since the moment they met getting together isn't even the worst part of this revelation. The worst part is that Elena might have actually moved on from her love for Damon when Season 6 begins. Also during Comic-Con, Plec revealed that TVD will have a four-month time jump between the events of the Season 5 finale and the Season 6 premiere, during which time, everyone has made "some big choices in their life." And while Elena definitely isn't jumping into bed with someone new, she's really not going to be in a good place. So, where does that leave fans that are on the edges of their seats waiting for this 'ship's triumphant reunion?

You'd better bet there's more from the Comic Con panel. Dobrev revealed that Elena won't be jumping into the arms of someone new — not even Stefan — because "that'd mean her experience and her love for Damon wasn't real." I mean, she's totally right. Elena and Damon are truly TVD's "great love" scenario, she's not just going to move onto some other guy just because she's dead — but that doesn't mean she's not going to get over it and what happened to him. Because, even though Plec's asserted that everyone in Mystic Falls will be looking for a fix to what's happened to Bonnie and Damon, sometimes you need to know when to throw in the towel. Elena Gilbert is pretty good at knowing when it's time to give up.

And with the possibility of Damon and Bonnie hooking up wherever they've been zapped to, it means that everyone is getting desperate enough to do something way out of character. Like, so out of character that we couldn't have predicted this from three feet away. For Damon and Bonnie, it'd be hooking up and entertaining any kind of romance with someone that they've never gotten along with not even for a second and for Elena, it'd be a moment of extreme, crushing darkness where she really believes that Damon can't come back to her. It'd be tragic and heartbreaking for everyone involved (mostly me and the rest of the Delena fans around the world) but, if we've learned anything from TVD it's that Julie Plec DGAF about how I feel or anyone in the TVD fandom for that matter.

Of course, there's a chance that "Bamon" won't happen. Plec assured Dos Santos and fans, who are probably grabbing their torches and pitchforks already, that "that kind of relationship would only be born out of chemistry and an onscreen connection." Which is kind of good to know, but this is TVD and every fan also knows how much they love to play romantic musical chairs — I mean, look at Elena, who's dated both Salvatore brothers, and Season 5's introduction of the Steroline 'ship. Anything and I mean anything is possible when it comes to hook-ups and romance on this series.

While it's not confirmed that Elena will move on from her consuming love for Damon in Season 6, if Damon hooks up with Bonnie, there really can't be that much hope for Delena. Unless there's a mutual act of desperation in Mystic Falls, like Elena turning off her humanity or giving up on the search for a solution to everyone's Damon-less problem. And even so, when Damon (and Bonnie, unfortunately) finally return, it's going to make things extremely awkward for everyone involved to explain their various moments of weakness. Ugh. Also, what about Jeremy?
