"Bamon"? Really? Terrible 'Shipper Name

Julie Plec intentionally (or unintentionally) planted a crazy idea into the minds of Vampire Diaries fans everywhere during The CW's Summer TCA Party this year, and it could involve Damon and Bonnie sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G. The thought is even too weird to fully comprehend, but it’s one that is here to stay. The TVD co-creator made a few rather ambiguous comments regarding the characters’ intertwining story arcs in Season 6, which consisted of what I'm calling some serious romantic undertones.

Plec made it clear that Damon and Bonnie will indeed be around come next fall, but added that the nature of their relationship may be in for a slight change-up:

“The mystery is where are they, what happened, are they dead, not dead, and what the hell are they going to do together, those two of all people?”

Anyone else think that statement is open to some serious interpretation? To add even more fuel to the romance fire, shortly after a Damon and Bonnie spoof video was unveiled during TVD 's panel at Comic-Con, Ian Somerhalder went so far as to tease possible ‘shipper names for the characters, claiming that Bamon sounds way better than Donnie. (He's totally right.) Meanwhile, Kat Graham hinted that fans will definitely “see more interaction between them” than ever before. But as for what kind of "interaction" she's referring to remains to be seen.

But Plec did tease a little more could-be romance when she spoke to E! at the start of August:

What we did want to do is we wanted to service the Bamon relationship from the books and at least give those two characters an opportunity—that we never thought we'd have frankly cause they never liked each other, and for good reason—to bond and get close and to be comrades. So it will start there, and it may never go any further—that's not the plan, but you never know

It’s no secret that there’s been some bad blood between these two throughout the years, but that’s to be expected when you kill someone’s witch mother and turn her into a vampire against her will. So, fair enough. However, in TVD 's Season 5 finale, they were both seen disappearing into oblivion while holding hands. Was that supposed to be some form of foreshadowing for next season?

If so, let’s have a look at the pros and cons.

Pro: It Provides Yet Another Reason for Damon to Be Shirtless

It’s hard to ever find a reason for why this shouldn't happen. Need I say more?

Con: It Would Make Bonnie the Worst Best Friend Ever

Bonnie knows how much Elena loves Damon, so to pull a stunt like this would really tarnish how fans will think of her as a person. The only thing that would make this betrayal acceptable would be if both Damon and Bonnie wind up losing their memories, wherever they end up going. At least then they'd be completely unaware they were doing anything wrong. It would also explain the sudden shift in their feelings toward each other. After all, you can’t really hate someone when you can’t even remember why you should.

Pro: It Would Make Book Fans Happy

For those of you who have read L.J. Smith’s books, you know that these two have a lot of history together — way more than what’s ever been conveyed on the TV series. So this would be the perfect opportunity to appease any Bamon or Donnie fans out there (if you even exist).

Con: The Chemistry Is Lacking

Granted, anything involving Damon automatically doubles in the hotness department, but personally I’ve never felt any kind of sexual tension between these two characters… like ever. That doesn’t exactly bode well for their romantic future. I’d take a Damon bathtub scene over this potential hookup any day. (Sorry, Bonnie.)

Pro: Jeremy Would Be Single Again

If Bonnie’s with Damon, this would leave not-so Little Gilbert free to pursue other interests. Like doing vast amounts of push-ups (preferable shirtless) or bonding with equally eligible bachelors Matt and Tyler (preferably shirtless). Sign me up for that plot twist!

Con: The ‘Shipping Name is Sub-Par

I’m sorry, but neither Bamon nor Donnie has the same nice ring to it as something like Delena or Klaroline. Call me biased, but this is a name combo I just can’t seem to get onboard with.

Verdict: We have a tie. Looks like this potential hookup could go either way, folks.
