Brad & Angelina Should Watch 'Gigli'

by Loretta Donelan

The now married Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are set to star in By The Sea, a film that is also directed by Jolie. Though little is known about the film's plot, Jolie and Pitt will be playing a couple. The actors haven't appeared in a movie together since Mr. And Mrs. Smith in 2005, and it was in filming that movie that the couple met. While there seem to be lots of successful, excellent movies in which costars fall in love, films like By The Sea don't have a high chance of succeeding, since collaborations between established couples on-screen tend to perform poorly.

The logic behind couple castings seems solid; off-screen chemistry should translate well on-screen, but few big box office love stories feature couples who have been married for years. Perhaps this is why the chemistry of celebrities who are falling in love on set works better than a pre-established couple. Hopefully, By The Sea will be as great as I'm hoping; I can't think of another movie in which the wife has both directed and starred alongside the husband, so maybe that is a better recipe for success.

Here are six flops that featured established couples like the new Mr. And Mrs. Pitt. I hope you know what you're doing, Brangelina. History is not on your side.

Gigli

At the height of Bennifer excitement was Gigli, the huge failure starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Though their relationship generated buzz for the film, it performed poorly at the box office and has been featured on a few "worst movies ever made" lists.

Swept Away

Guy Ritchie directed then wife Madonna in this 2002 rom-com. It received terrible reviews, a whopping 5 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and did horribly at the box office.

Jersey Girl

Another film from Affleck and Lopez, Jersey Girl received mixed reviews. Both were nominated for Worst Actor Razzies, and they were also nominated for "Worst On-Screen Couple."

Cruel Intentions

Then couple Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe starred in this creepy film, which ultimately received mixed reviews. The acting was specifically highlighted as bad.

Shanghai Surprise

Sean Penn and Madonna had just gotten married when they made this disaster. Madonna won the Golden Raspberry for Worst Actress, and the film received terrible reviews overall.

Far And Away

Power couple Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman starred in this big budget epic, which ultimately failed to perform all that well critically, or at the box office.
