Rory & Lorelai Aren't Exactly BFFs in Real Life

by Lindsey Kupfer

In case you haven't already heard the exciting news, Gilmore Girls is coming to Netflix. It's finally here and now we get to watch one of our favorite on-screen duos whenever we want to. It’s impossible to get too much Rory and Lorelai in our lives. It’s been seven years since the dramatic series finale when Rory lands her dream job reporting on the Obama campaign trail. Nothing makes me cry the way Stars Hollow saying goodbye to her does. Lorelai and Luke’s last kiss of the series also really gets me choked up. Of course, none of that compares to all of the emotional moments between the two Gilmore girls themselves. But now that the show is over, are Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel friends? I like to think that they hang out on a regular basis, but that might not be true.

One of the things we love about the TV shows Friends, besides that it's amazing, is that Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston are best friends in real life. The way that Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph are friends or the way Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are BFFs. There's something about an on-screen-off-screen duo that we seem to be obsessed with as a society. When it comes to Graham and Bledel, realistically it seems that they are acquaintances who hang out every so often, but not on a weekly basis.

Last year Lauren Graham told fans on Reddit that she and Bledel would always have "a special bond." Though the friendship didn't turn into Rachel and Monica-type friends, Graham still keeps up with her on-screen daughter when they get the chance. In an interview with Huff Post Live, Graham said that last year she got lunch with Bledel and discussed Bledel's then boyfriend (now husband) Vincent Kartheiser. "I just had lunch with her not too long ago and I knew she was dating him so that's really cool," she said. Graham congratulated the couple's engagement on Twitter, but there was no news about whether or not Graham attended their secret nuptials in August.

Bledel even told TV Guide back in 2005 that they did hang out sometimes, but not a ton. "We have hung out outside of work, and it's fun, but we see each other so much at work that it's almost like if we hung out outside of work, we'd hang out all the time! We'd never be apart." To be honest, this quote leads me to believe she doesn't have a best friend, because most best friends hang out and talk 24/7.

Graham was almost like a real mother on set though. Gilmore Girls was Alexis' first real acting job. Before the show she was strictly a model. "There's a thing, especially on that show, where the camera moves," Graham explained in a Q&A quoted by CNN. "It's very complicated, you have to be talking; everything has to be exactly right. Then you have to land at a certain mark. She'd never hit a mark before. And so I would put my arm around her and often be arm-in-arm with her." OK, so they might not be best friends, but at least Bledel and Graham still get along and have such great memories of each other.
