OK, Is His New Song About Rita Or What?
On Sunday evening, Calvin Harris' premiered his new song, "Outside," with Ellie Goulding, and its sad lyrics about a failed love affair will definitely get people talking about his relationship with Rita Ora again. So, is "Outside" about Rita Ora? Of course, I can't say for sure, but I'll be perfectly up front with you: I really don't think so. After all, in September, the 30-year-old Scottish DJ told Ryan Seacrest that his last single, "Blame," was definitely not about Ora. In fact, according to Harris, John Newman, the song's featured vocalist, wrote the lyrics entirely by himself.
Additionally, in August, Harris slammed Ora on Twitter by saying that, unlike her, he doesn't feel the need to "talk to the papers about every aspect" of his personal life. So, something tells me that he's not too keen on the idea of opening up about his exes via song. Just a hunch. Inevitable Ora rumors aside, "Outside" is another fantastic collaboration from Harris and Goulding that will have you both dancing and crying in no time. Honestly, what could be better?
On "Outside's" first verse and pre-chorus, Goulding sings:
Look at what you've done
Stand still, falling away from me
When it takes so long
Fire's out, what do you want to be?
I'm holding on
Myself was never enough for me
Gotta be so strong
There's a power in what you do
Now every other day, I'll be watchin' you, oh
The instrumental slowly builds during the chorus until it explodes into a symphony of strings and synths:
Oh, I'll show what it feels like, now I'm on the outside
Oh, we did everything right, now I'm on the outside
Oh, I'll show you what it feels like, now I'm on the outside
Oh, we did everything right, now I'm on the outside
Like Harris and Goulding's last song, "I Need Your Love," "Outside" has a forlorn, wistful quality to it. It's definitely what I'd call a "tears on the dance floor" anthem. If you're "on the outs" with love at the moment and need a new track to fist-pump and bawl your eyes out to, "Outside" will do nicely, that's for sure.
"Outside" is taken from Harris' upcoming new album, Motion , which is due out on Nov. 4.
