Will Raina Join the 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'?

by Leah Marilla Thomas

On this week's episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the group races to reach the temple in the ancient alien city before Hydra. Have fun explaining that sentence to anyone that doesn't watch the show. Meanwhile, we'll see the return of Raina — could Raina finally join Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on the side of the good guys? Ruth Negga is slated to appear in the next two episodes, which includes the midseason finale. Granted, she was just cast in the World of Warcraft movie as Lady Taria. However, my hopes are high that this antiheroine will finally become part of the Marvel team, particularly if we are losing an agent on Tuesday night to the temple's sacrifice.

I have wanted Raina to team up with Coulson from the start. She wants to study superpowers and it's unfortunate that S.H.I.E.L.D. does not have the best resources. There's still a lot of unanswered questions about Raina. We still don't understand her commitment to floral prints. Though, there doesn't necessarily have to be anything mystic about that. I think it would be hilarious if she just liked them and that's all there was to it. According to the official ABC press release, "May and Skye race to get to Raina before Whitehall takes her while the others are at the temple in the alien city."

Raina is almost certainly Inhuman or Kree, or whatever Skye turns out to be in this universe. Worst case scenario, she and Skye will be pitted against each other like Peeta and Katniss were in Mockingjay. We have a half-alien possibly superpowered lady, and you have one of the "chosen" as well. You know how this chess match goes and it almost never ends well for everyone involved. Hopefully, May and Skye will get to Raina first. She clearly has a lot of background information on this other-worldly mythology. Skye's father mentioned in passing that her grandmother used to tell her "fairy tales" that he had promised to make come true. Who is her grandmother? What were the tales? Skye is going into literal alien territory here and I would like for her to have an ally.

The team could always use another woman, and Raina's scientific expertise could be valuable to their endeavors going forward. Raina is a chemist while Simmons is a biologist.

Plus, we know that Raina wants nothing to do with Hydra and their "so 1945" plans for world domination. Now that Skye's father has teamed up with Whitehall, Raina is on her own. She's a free agent, and I think her journey would be incomplete without a romp in S.H.I.E.L.D. to add to her resume. I would say that Raina could be in on the Doctor's plan to get revenge on Whitehall for killing Skye's mother — however, he was so mean to Raina that I don't want them to be partners anymore. Surely he can find someone else to settle his rages.
