Why Did Shakira Name Her Son Sasha?

Congratulations are in order! Along with her longtime partner Gerard Piqué, Shakira welcomed her second son on Thursday night in Barcelona, Spain. The new baby joins his two-year-old big brother Milan. Unlike most celebrity birth announcements, we are not in any suspense about the child's name. Piqué's grandfather, Amador Bernabéu, has already revealed that the baby is named Sasha Piqué Mebarak, and the news was also confirmed on Shakira's official website. So now, you might be wondering about hte meaning behind that choice. Why did the couple name their baby Sasha?

According to Bernabéu, "He's called Sasha which is Alexander in Russian." A Russian name? That seems a little random to me given that Gerard Piqué is from Barcelona, Spain and Shakira's father is a Lebanese American immigrant and her mother is from Colombia with some Italian and Spanish heritage mixed in.

The name is further explained on Shakira's website. Part of the birth announcement reads, "The name Sasha is of Greek and Russian descent and means 'defender of mankind' and 'warrior.'" Sounds fierce to me.

If Sasha doesn't want to be a famous singer like his mom, his great-grandfather has already registered him as a member of FC Barcelona, the team for which Gerard Piqué plays soccer. It's an honorary tradition and Sasha is number 155,629. Brother Milan was also registered at his birth.
