Even when all the signs someone is going to break up with you are present and breaking up is the right choice, it's never going to be easy. Separating your life from someone else's takes a toll on you and it's always, to some degree, hard to move on. We will search for anything that might ease the pain, and those searches rarely come to fruition. Is there a cure all? Would, say, singing about it help? Maybe, like, if you made a music video or something? It's worth a try. This was, perhaps, the thought process of Alex, the guy who made a music video about his break-up.
So let's set the scene: It's 2011. Alex and Whitney have just broken up. And Alex, in the middle of his heartbreak, decides to make a music video about his break-up, aptly titled "Let's Just Be Friends". Almost four years later, when the wounds have healed, the team at BuzzFeed thinks, You know what would be a great idea? If we put Alex and Whitney in the same room and made them watch the music video together.
Seriously, if you were stuck in a room with your ex, what would be the worst thing that could happen? (Actually, I guess the universal answer to that is you two end up randomly having sex or getting in a fist fight. But, like, what's the third worst thing?) Personally, I'd have trouble just looking my ex squarely in the face without desperately trying to avoid eye contact or jump out the nearest window. The very last thing I'd want to do with an ex is rehash our relationship, but hey, to each their own.
Alex and Whitney are clearly stronger than I am. Not only do they watch the video and talk about their relationship together, but they do so willingly for a video that will surely get thousands of page views. They've got guts.
Here's the video Alex made post break-up in 2011:
And here's Alex and Whitney watching the music video together:
You've got to hand it to the pair. They're still all smiles at the end of the video.
If you've been through a break-up recently and are pretty over watching sappy rom-coms, listening to sad music and reading heartbreaking love stories, then I've got you covered.
Here's are 4 break-up videos that prove the Internet will always be better than a significant other:
1. Jenna Marbles teaches you the make-or-break moments in a relationship
She will make you glad you're single and that your significant other isn't attracted to Hitler. Also, if they disapprove of small dogs they're obviously not the one for you.
2. Superwoman shows you the stages of break-up
This woman is quite honestly my hero. You think she's going to peak when she's lamenting about life to Bollywood music, but she just keeps getting better.
3. Miranda breaks up with her cheating bae
Do not ever try to high five your bae. And if worst comes to worst, get someone else to deliver the news for you. Preferably an attractive bro in a backwards hat.
4. Jonathan and Ivory's break-up song
This one is actually super adorable, heartbreaking and creative. It was their last song as a couple, outlining their reasons for splitting. (Jonathan and Ivory live in Williamsburg FYI. Least surprising news ever.)
