Olive Garden Has A Food Truck Now

by Mikaela Gilbert-Lurie

In journalism, there's something called "breaking news," which is the kind of news that's so current and important that reporters drop whatever else we're covering to get on the hot story ASAP. This is one of those stories: Olive Garden now has a food truck. Sorry, let me rephrase: You can now get the world's most famous breadsticks from a moving vehicle. Potential headline: Breadstick Truck Hits The Streets.

The advent of the food truck comes right on the heels of Olive Garden's announcement a few weeks ago that it is adding a magical item to its lunch menu called a "breadstick sandwich." The breadstick sandwich is exactly what it sounds like: A sandwich with a breadstick for a bun, which comes filled with either chicken parmesan or Italian meatballs. These breadstick sandwiches are (as they should be) the star of the chain's food truck tour, which kicks off this week in NYC and then makes its way across the country. You can track the location of the truck at the delightfully named Breadstick Nation website or on Twitter with the #BreadstickNation hashtag.

As excited as I am for the BSS (breadstick sandwich, duh), Olive Garden's announcement got me thinking: What other chains would I like to see on wheels? Here's my wish list of 10 other food chains that should immediately go mobile:

1. Chipotle

Sometimes you don't just want a burrito bowl with black beans, chicken, corn salsa, pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream, and yes-I-know-it's-extra-thank-you guac; you need one. A mobile chipotle would solve all my emergency burrito situations, especially with chorizo potentially hitting the menu soon.

2. IHOP

I guess you'd have to call it ITOP, the International Truck of Pancakes. Either way, pancakes whenever you need them (and with a smile, too) seems like a really important thing to exist.

3. Krispy Kreme

As a native West Coaster, I don't understand the Dunkin' Donuts hype (#sorrynotsorry). Krispy Kreme is the real MVP, and since donuts are wheel shaped anyway it just makes sense that they be sold on vehicles.

4. Pizza Hut

Pizza truck! Make the pizza truck happen! I want my cheese-stuffed, pretzel-crust pizza from a truck!

5. Red Lobster

You know their lobster rolls would be great. And their biscuits. Yaaass plz.

6. 7-Eleven

Does this even count? Obviously I just need more Slurpees in my life.

7. Sonic

It would subvert the whole idea of a drive-in! It drives to you! So trendy right?

8. The Cheesecake Factory

No longer would you have to listlessly roam the streets thinking to yourself, "If only I had a piece of cheesecake."

9. Wawa

I think I only want this to be a food truck because Philly/ New Jersey residents would lose it if their beloved convenience store was able to roam the rest of the easter seaboard.

10. Dave and Buster's

I don't know how it would work. I don't know where you would play the games on a truck. But if someone can bring the joy of Dave and Buster's to unsuspecting individuals walking down the street, that person will be my new hero.
