Debuting on stage in 2010, Matilda: The Musical has been a major hit in London’s West End. Produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Matilda has gone on to become a record-breaking musical winning seven Laurence Olivier Awards in 2012. Now the exceptional musical is being adapted to the big screen by Netflix, and features a whole host of major names. So here’s everything we know about Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical so far, and when you can expect to see it.

All the main players of the stage production are here – including director Matthew Warchus and writer Dennis Kelly. The play’s composer and songwriter Tim Minchin is also on board, adapting his original music and lyrics to the big screen with hits like “My House” and “When I Grow Up.”

Described as “an inspirational musical tale of an extraordinary girl”, Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical follows the plot as Dahl’s book, which follows a young girl with a “vivid imagination” and the powers of telekinesis as she helps “others change their stories, whilst also taking charge of her own destiny,” per the official synopsis.

Emma Thompson is almost unrecognisable as the delightfully terrifying Miss Trunchbull. Set to one of the musical’s biggest hits “Revolting Children,” the trailer gives glimpses at some of Matilda’s most loved characters including Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey, and Stephen Graham as Mr. Wormwood.

Rising star Alisha Weir plays the magical Matilda, accompanied by Time’s Stephen Graham and Waco’s Andrea Riseborough as Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood. No Time To Die’s Lashana Lynch stars as the beloved Miss Honey, and Sex Education’s Sindhu Vee as librarian Mrs. Phelps. As previously stated, Emma Thompson transforms into the terrifying Miss Trunchbull, too.

Newcomers Rei Yamauchi Fulker, Charlie Hodson-Prior, and Winter Jarrett-Glasspool play Lavender, Bruce Bogtrotter, and Amanda Thripp respectively, in what will be their first on-screen roles. The film also stars Meesha Garbett, Lauren Alexandra, Louis Martin, Carl Spencer, and Jemma Geanaus.

Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical Release Date

Matilda the Musical will premiere exclusively in UK cinemas on Dec. 2. According to Digital Spy, the film will be available to stream worldwide sometime in December.
