Sentimental Poems To Share On Father's Day

by Megan Shepherd

You know, dads are pretty great. We've got dads to thank for lots of things, but it seems like some of dad's best contributions are easy to forget. Remember when dad hung up that framed *NSYNC poster you just had to have? Remember when he'd push you around on the dolly like it was your own personal thrill ride and ask, "how fast you wanna go?" Remember when he'd toss you up in the air and it felt, without question, like you were flying? With any luck, dad's been delighting you from day one. Why not take some time to let him know how much it's all meant. If you're not quite sure how to say it, consider doing so with one of these sentimental poems to share on Father's Day.

Sure, poems aren't everyone's jam. But they're great for helping you get out some of the love and respect you couldn't express otherwise. When it comes to choosing a poem to make dad feel special, try not to put too much pressure on it. Choose something that's heartfelt, sincere, and relevant to your relationship. Even better, write your own! But if the thought of writing a haiku gives you hives, and you're not crazy about the idea of studying up on iambic pentameter, feel free to borrow these loving words, instead.

1. Talk Again, Lang Leav

2. Life Lessons, Joanna Fuchs

You may have thought I didn't see,

Or that I hadn't heard,

Life lessons that you taught to me,

But I got every word.

Perhaps you thought I missed it all,

And that we'd grow apart,

But Dad, I picked up everything,

It's written on my heart.

Without you, Dad, I wouldn't be

The person I am today;

You built a strong foundation

No one can take away.

I've grown up with your values,

And I'm very glad I did;

So here's to you, dear father,

From your forever grateful kid.

3. Desiderata by Max Ehrmann

4. Happy Father's Day, Marian Jones

Since the day that I was born

You have been my guiding light;

The one I always turn to

When things aren't going right.

You are generous with your time

When I need a helping hand:

If sometimes I'm neglectful,

You always understand.

You've been my inspiration,

As the years have come and gone;

A gentle loving Father,

Whom I can depend upon.

So on this special Father's Day

I send my thanks for all you do;

For no-one in the world deserves

More happiness than you.

5. Untitled, Atticus

6. Dear Dad, Anonymous

You mean so very much to me,

And I want you to know

That you are always in my heart,

No matter where I go.

You're always giving, always there

To help in any way;

The loving things you've done for me,

I never could repay.

I can't imagine what I'd do

Without the love you give.

I'll treasure your sweet heart of gold

As long as I shall live.

7. A Second Dad, Anonymous

8. Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,

Because their words had forked no lightning they

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright

Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,

And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight

Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,

Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

9. Dad's Place, Anonymous

10. My Father, My Friend, Peggy Stewart

For my father, my friend,

This to me you have always been.

Through the good times and the bad,

Your understanding I have had.

A gentle man at heart,This sets you apart,

From the others I've seen,

You mean so much to me.

The laughter we have shared,

Cannot be compared.

The tears I have shed,

As you lovingly nodded your head.

You have always been there,

With a smile and a hug,

A precious gift from our God up above.

The times that I have been down and sad,

Your silly ways could always make me glad.

You gave me strength to carry on,

Even when all hope seemed to be gone.

The lessons in life that I have learned,

Are from your genuine love and concern.

With deep appreciation for all you have done.

You, Dad,

Are my number one.

With all my love,

Your Daughter, Your Friend
