Consider this hypothetical situation: you find yourself in a theater watching Fifty Shades Darker, getting all hot and bothered, and then returning to your home — still hot, bothered, and maybe a little unsatisfied. Or maybe you're feeling hot and bothered, but you are opposed to the portrayal of BDSM culture in the film series based on the E.L James book trilogy. Well, regardless of what angle or perspective you're coming from, chances are, there might be a time in your life that you are feeling some kind of way and need to watch movies like Fifty Shades on Netflix in February. You know, if you're in a certain type of mood.
It's a short month, but a month jam-packed with a lot of love-themed connotations. One day in February you might find yourself wanting a relationship. Or perhaps you're perpetually single (I see you, I feel you, I am you), and want to catch a glimpse of the steamy passions of a long-term relationship but don't actually want to be in a long-term relationship. Don't worry y'all, as per usual, Netflix has your back. Check out one of these flicks and don't forget the wine and chocolate, because, I mean, obviously.
1'A Teacher' (2013)
Watching A Teacher, the indie debut feature of director Hannah Fidell, is a way for you to support indie film and woman directors, so win-win. This film is also about a teacher's illicit and uncomfortably possessive relationship with her student, so it will definitely take your tummy on twisty-turny ride. This is a similar roller coaster to what you may feel when watching the lives of Christian Grey and Ana Steele.
Twilight is probably the closest movie to 50 Shades around, since they are practically related. I mean, the E.L. James series literally started as Twilight fan-fiction.
A little bit of counter-culture (but mainly innapropriate) sexuality, a little bit of infidelity, a little bit of violence — this Indian drama has everything you may need if you liked watching Fifty Shades Darker.
4'Romeo & Juliet' (2013)
Maybe a classic love story is more your speed, in which case the most ill-fated love story of all time is ideal.
5'Kama Sutra: A Tale Of Love' (1996)
Jealousy and its connection to sexuality is a huge theme in the Fifty Shades series. This theme is explored in Kama Sutra in full detail. As an added bonus, the setting of 16th century India adds a quantitative layer of beauty. The garb of courtesans back in the day is intoxicating.
6'Step Up' (2006)
You know what's even hotter than implied sex? Steamy dancing. You know what's even hotter than steamy dancing? Channing and Jenna Dewan-Tatum steamy dancing together. This dance classic will have you like, "Christian Grey, who?"
7'How He Fell In Love' (2015)
Clandestine relationships for the win (or lose) in this 2015 indie film. In the New York-set feature film, a man meets an older woman at an ex's wedding and the relationship gets more complicated from there. There's a sexy bath tub scene if you're into that sort of thing.
8'Perfect Girl' (2014)
Say you got a little too involved in the fantasy of Fifty Shades. It's OK, we've all been there, don't worry. This coming-of-age story follows two young love-hopefuls who've been tiptoeing around each other for years, but are now concerned a relationship won't work out because of the fantasies they've created in their minds. This film captures the fanciful nature of Fifty Shades.
9'Those People' (2015)
One of the seductive parts of Christian Grey's world is his swanky lifestyle. Those People follows this vein with the exploits of a characters living in New York's Upper East Side. In the film, a gay painter finds himself torn between his age-old obsession with a handsome (but uninterested) socialite and a new romance with an older (but interested) concert pianist. Perfect for victims of unrequited love and fans of the high-class lifestyle the world over.
10'Hard To Get' (2014)
There is a consistent danger undertone in the Fifty Shades series. If that sort of thing gets your heart-abeating, look no further than this South African drama. In the film, a typically unconcerned lothario, T.K., falls for Skiets, and follows her blind-with-love as she undertakes several criminal activities.
11'Practical Magic' (1998)
Love, power, and danger, oh my! Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman make for some seriously sexy witches and their fatal relationship difficulties make for such great cinema. Get ready to let this '90s classic put a spell on you (get it?).
A relationship started under bizarre conditions? Check. Complicated sex? Check. Distant and mysterious male lead? Check and check! Get down with this French-German film about lovers thrown together and then forced to deal, side by side, with a terminal illness. Don't forget your tissues.
13'40 Days and 40 Nights' - (2002)
The feather scene. The feather scene. I think that's all I need to say here. But really, the feather scene. Sure, a movie about a guy giving up sexual for Lent might not seem like something similar to Fifty Shades...but the feather scene, guys. Trust me on this.
