It's been a big week for Kylie Jenner and her fans. After revealing on Sunday that her and Travis Scott's daughter was born on February 1, Jenner also shared another detail with fans this week. Their daughter's name is Stormi Webster, with the baby taking her father's last name. Travis Scott's real name is Jacques Webster — so where did the Travis Scott stage name come from? For fans who don't know the history behind the nickname, Stormi's surname is a surprise.
Scott's stage moniker actually has a surprising personal origin. The "Goosebumps" rapper has shared in several interviews that he created the name "Travis Scott" in honor of his uncle. In an interview with Grantland in 2014, Scott shared that his uncle Travis was his "favorite relative," and the inspiration behind the name.
"My uncle's name is Travis. He was like my favorite uncle. My favorite relative. I looked up to him and sh*t," Scott told Grantland at the time. "That n**** was just cool as f*ck. He always just had swag. He played golf and sh*t. He just had swag. That n**** was just smart. Always made good decisions, good business decisions."
The Grantland interview explains the "Travis," but what about the "Scott?" Well, a year later, he clarified that the second half of his stage name is also in honor of his uncle. In a 2015 Complex interview, Scott revealed that his uncle's nickname was "Scott."
“My favorite uncle's name is Travis. That n****'s just smart and cool. The Scott comes from him, too, that was his nickname," he told Complex. "I was, like, man, if I wanted to be a rapper I wanted to be this n****. He has this ill-ass crib, is fresh as hell, has all this land. N**** is smooth. Travis is smooth. I've always been smooth."
Of course, Travis Scott is far from the first rapper to adapt a nickname that pays homage to a personal influence. Still, Scott's stage name shows a close bond with his uncle, and it's a way for him to honor his family member through his work.
Scott and Jenner were first seen together during a Coachella party last April. Later that month, the two of them went to an NBA playoff game together, and Jenner was seen at Scott's 25th birthday party. They've been serious about the relationship since long before the pregnancy rumors started — the couple got matching butterfly tattoos back in June 2017. Before Jenner announced Stormi's name, fans thought the couple might have actually named their daughter after the insect, though it looks like that's not the case. (Unless a certain theory is to be believed.)
While Jenner kept the details of her pregnancy private from fans, it looks like she's not holding back about her new daughter. Though she only posted the photo of baby Stormi on Instagram Tuesday, it's already set a record — the image is now the most-liked photo on Instagram. (Previously, the honor was held by Beyoncé's pregnancy announcement.) For his part, Scott hasn't posted much about his daughter online yet, though he did share a message about her birth in a tweet Sunday. Scott referred to Stormi as a "new rager in town."
Hopefully, we'll soon hear the story of just why Jenner and Scott named their baby Stormi. According to TMZ, the couple had the name picked out before the baby was born, so there's likely an interesting reason involved. Of course, it's Jenner and Scott's decision to share or not share any details about their child — but in the meantime, fans will be doing plenty of speculation about the meaning behind Stormi Webster's name.
