Even though I'm the kind of person who reads her daily horoscope with a hint of skepticism, I've still
always been curious about which zodiac signs are most compatible and why. With every new crush, I'd be sure to find out their birthday so I could consult the stars (aka Google) and find out if we were meant to be, or if we were doomed before we even began. Although I've now developed a slightly more cynical view of soulmates — I think we all have many potential soulmates, not just one — I still haven't lost my curiosity about how my zodiac sign affects my love life... especially when it comes to figuring out which other signs I'm the best match for. But are there certain signs that are guaranteed soulmates, or is it more nuanced than that?
"When it comes right down to it, soulmates are a question of soul and
not [your] astrolog[ical] sign at all — but in a broader sense, there may be an ideally compatible sign for all of us," Craig Martin, Astrologer, Spiritual Guide, and Owner of Sage of Stars, tells Bustle. "The answer to which sign is best for us lies in astrological opposites. Signs that are opposite each other are learning similar life lessons, and by pairing with your opposite sign you create a magnet; an energy for attraction and growth."
"opposites attract" thing might seem cliche, but it can be refreshing to be with someone who complements your personality traits instead of mirroring them. If you're curious who the other half of your astrologically approved power couple is, here are the six opposite pairs of most compatible zodiac signs. As a couple, Aries and Libra have the perfect
balance of independence and togetherness, and are excellent at communicating and, when necessary, compromising.
"Drawn together by the common theme of individuality and compromise, these two are work towards remaining unique and separate while joining at the same time," Martin says.
2 Taurus & Scorpio
Taurus and Scorpio are both super in tune with their own emotions, which makes them a great match: they're willing to totally open up and share their lives with each other.
"Working towards the goal of 'mine and ours', this pair is both sensual and in touch with the deeper meaning of intimacy," Martin says.
3 Gemini & Sagittarius
When they're together, Gemini and Sagittarius will never be bored. This soulmate-like connection is totally mental: they challenge each other intellectually and bond through their love of learning.
"Connected through learning and the higher concepts of philosophy, these two are always up for a good laugh or a serious debate," Martin says.
4 Cancer & Capricorn
Cancer and Capricorn make the power couple to end all power couples. They're strong on their own, but together, they're a force to be reckoned with, and work together to build an amazing life for themselves.
"If any two signs know about the workings of the world it's [Cancer and Capricorn], capable of both domestic and professional success that work perfectly at setting up home and office," Martin says.
5 Leo & Aquarius
Leo and Aquarius make the perfect team: they're able to work seamlessly together thanks to their opposite leadership styles — with fearless Leo taking the lead, of course.
"The leader and the [follower], [Leo and Aquarius] don't exist without each other," Martin says. "These two are bonded by collective community and the role models that they produce."
6 Virgo & Pisces
You won't find a more pure, beautiful connection than Virgo and Pisces: two signs who are always thinking of others make amazing, loving partners for each other.
"Always more in the background, but essential to human happiness, these two are attracted by their helpful, selfless ways, both practical and emotional," Martin says.
So if you're single, make sure to find out your date's sign, just in case the "astrological opposites attract" theory turns out to have clout. And if you're taken but your current partner isn't your astrological opposite, don't worry: any couple can become more intimate and
deepen their connection over time.
