Luke & Jessica Aren’t Completely Over Each Other In ‘The Defenders’
While Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Matt Murdock, and Danny Rand's solo shows have occasionally crossed over, The Defenders, premiering Aug. 18, will be the first time all four heroes are together, battling Sigourney Weaver's villainous character Alexandra Reid. That means that Luke (Krysten Ritter) and Jessica (Krysten Ritter) will be reunited for the first time since their intense whirlwind romance and messy breakup in Jessica Jones Season 1. They have a lot of baggage to overcome, but could Luke Cage and Jessica Jones get back together?
The couple had so much chemistry when they were first introduced as drinking buddies and very athletic sex partners, but once Luke found out about Jessica's Killgrave-induced murder of his wife, the two split. Both characters have since moved on.
During Luke Cage Season 1, Luke pursued a relationship first with Misty Knight, then with Claire Temple. And Jessica seemed content to let Luke go. But according to Colter, Luke and Jessica's relationship may not be completely over yet. According to ComicBook.com, Colter told the audience at the Comicpalooza Defenders panel, "I can tease you that there may or may not be something between them" in this new series. He added, "I mean, it’s great. You get to see Luke and Jessica together again on screen. Hopefully you’ll all be satisfied seeing how it moves to another storyline."
And at The Defenders San Diego Comic-Con panel, Colter continued to tease a Luke and Jessica reunion, or at last some sparks, according to Screenrant. "The flame is not out, let’s be honest," he said. "We have a lot of stuff going on. I think there’s some progress, I think we make some strides but this is a long form television series that, you know, we could go there now, but then where do we have to go? It takes time."
Maybe these comments means that the TV show universe is slowly moving towards becoming more like the Marvel comics universe, where Luke Cage and Jessica Jones are married. For now, though, Luke still has Claire in his orbit, and Jessica Jones Season 2 may introduce a new love interest for the PI as well.
With the way things ended between Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, the former Marvel couple don't seem destined for a trip down the aisle anytime soon. But maybe The Defenders will at least allow them to bury the hatchet.
