Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker have been quite public about their relationship in recent weeks, and now, they’re making it red carpet official. The couple walked the red carpet of the 2021 Video Music Awards in matching ensembles that can best be described in one word: iconic.
Drawing inspiration from the ’90s, Kardashian’s lace-up leather corset dress was the star of the moment, accompanied by Barker’s matching black suit with stud embellishments. The ’90s were a major trend for the evening, with everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Lil Nas X to Bretman Rock pulling inspiration from the decades prior. It was nostalgic but still very 2021 — and, of course, still very VMAs. Unlike other award shows, the VMAs truly allow artists and celebrities to have fun with fashion without having to worry about antiquated rules on what is or isn’t conventionally acceptable to wear.
Kardashian and Barker both understood the assignment. Hand in hand, their outfits complemented each other perfectly — they were simple yet elevated thanks to small design details. And from the color to the fabrics, their looks were heavily in line with Barker’s darker, harder aesthetic and Kardashian’s fashion-forward attitude.
And to the surprise of no one, fans were eating it all up.
The couple’s looks are a surefire example of the power of style simplicity. Neither outfit is over-the-top or overdone: They’re both understated, and that’s precisely why they’re such a homerun. With the VMAs’ no-rules-required policy, it’s easy to do too much with an outfit. These two looks, however, do the most with the least, making stars out of the fabrics, fits, and simple embellishments.
And, of course, Kardashian and Barker are iconic to begin with. There’s a reason why so many can’t get enough of them: They seriously look that good together.
